Meet WBB: Erica
"I was six years old when I started circus performance. I rose to the varsity level, a step below professional, with a specialization in aerial silks and the trapeze. Circus artistry is not common in Italy, but I love it. When you are up there in the air, it’s only you. The adrenaline, the energy you have… I don’t even know how to explain it.
Circus is a performance. You need to be an actor. You need to be a dancer. You need to be strong. When you’re ten meters from the floor, everyone is looking at you, and the audience has expectations— you must be perfect from your finger-tips to your toes. This is your moment.
Even though you work alone in your act, you must work in a group for many of the other performances. Circus taught me how to coexist in a group. It was a challenge in the beginning because everyone is different, and people try to show off in order to stand out. Through the years, I learned when to speak my mind, but I also learned when to shut up. Understanding this balance is hard for a lot of people not just in circus, but in the corporate world as well. Circus shaped me to be the leader that I am today; not just one that directs a group, but one that builds a team."
