[EXPLORE A*] “I TOLD YOU THINGS”: KHI TƯ DUY ĐẠO DIỄN DẪN DẮT TỪNG LỰA CHỌN SÁNG TẠO

[EXPLORE A*] “I TOLD YOU THINGS”: WHEN A DIRECTOR’S VISION GUIDES EVERY CREATIVE DECISION
“I understand that, in a creative production, almost no detail is there by accident. Every image, sound and element of composition is the result of a deliberate choice.” — Vinser Thảo Nguyên, A* achiever in Cambridge International A Level Media Studies 2026

💡 Unlike subjects assessed primarily through written examinations, A Level Media Studies combines academic knowledge with creative practice. Students analyse how media construct meaning and influence audiences, while applying this understanding to the development of their own media products.
For the Advanced Portfolio, students create a range of interconnected media products—such as films, music videos and documentaries—alongside related promotional campaigns, album artwork and other supporting materials. They also document every stage of the process, from research and planning to production and refinement. Students must clearly identify their target audience and explain why each choice of content, imagery and platform is appropriate to the aims of their campaign.
In the 2026 Cambridge International A Level examinations, Vinser Thảo Nguyên, a Grade 12 student at Vinschool Central Park, achieved an outstanding A* in Media Studies. For her Advanced Portfolio, she developed a promotional campaign for Lyn, a fictional artist, and her debut album, Poetry. The campaign comprised an original music video for Gracie Abrams’ song I Told You Things, a digipak and the artist’s Instagram page.
FROM UNDERSTANDING THE AUDIENCE TO SHAPING AN ARTIST’S IDENTITY
As director and production team leader, Thảo Nguyên began by researching her target audience, examining the conventions of indie pop and analysing the work of artists such as Lizzy McAlpine, Gracie Abrams and Sombr. These insights informed Lyn’s artistic identity: minimalist, mature and elegant, with a subtle sense of nostalgia. A warm, muted colour palette, carefully considered visual effects and handwritten typography were used consistently across the music video, digipak and Instagram page, creating a cohesive campaign with a strong and recognisable identity.
🎬 To translate her interpretation of the song into visual form, Thảo Nguyên analysed each section of the lyrics and carefully considered her use of colour, lighting, setting and editing pace. Rather than relying on elaborate effects, she chose a raw, intimate visual style reminiscent of everyday footage—an approach that complements both the music and the protagonist’s inner world.
The video’s emotional climax was filmed on the Ho Chi Minh City Metro. At first, the train appears to offer the protagonist a way back to someone from her past. Ultimately, however, it rushes by without her boarding. The image becomes a metaphor for acceptance: choosing not to return, but instead to continue on her own journey.
WILLING TO START OVER TO PRESERVE THE CREATIVE VISION
One of Thảo Nguyên’s most difficult decisions was to discard nearly 60% of the footage she had already completed after realising that the original locations and equipment did not fully capture the spirit of the song.
She reassessed the work, revised her approach and organised a reshoot. This process demonstrates that behind an emotionally resonant media product lies the ability to experiment, reflect critically and embrace change when the outcome does not yet fulfil the creative intention.
Throughout the project, Thảo Nguyên was involved in every stage—from concept development, production planning and team coordination to editing and completing the final music video. She also had to communicate her creative direction clearly, ensuring that the entire team shared the same vision and worked together cohesively.
“The Media Studies project also taught me how to manage a project, lead a team and communicate ideas clearly—essential skills as I prepare to pursue Arts Management at the University of Manchester,” Thảo Nguyên shared.
