Is it a good idea to use your own personal emotions as an actor? YAY OR NAY?

Drumroll….
Well... yes AND no.
In our opinion any actor could and should use his own personal emotions for extensive research.
We also believe that using your own personal emotions on set, can be unreliable and a slippery slope.
Want to know why??? Check out our video by Acting coach Hanneke Blommaert-Willems

Are you okay with making mistakes❓❓❓
If not, get ready, because making mistakes is actually a good thing! Many research shows that making mistakes is essential to any process of growth.
We can gain so much knowledge from our mistakes, but only if we are willing to learn from them. Also mistakes can actually trigger creativity. If our original plan isn’t working we are forced to think outside the box to find solutions and new ways of thinking and doing and as an artist, OUTSIDE THE BOX is exactly where you need to be.

TICS AND MANNERISMS
HEY ACTORS, most of the greatest characters in film have specific tics, quirks, habits and mannerisms that really set them apart, but which of them are the actors own specific mannerisms and which of them are the characters’?
A mannerism is a gesture, speech pattern, or way of behaving which repeats often and is characteristic of that person. These behaviors might vary from an everyday movement (clearing the throat, flipping your hair) to a very specific tic (twitching or biting nails when nervous). Quirks can be anything that makes your character unique, interesting and stand out.
Did you ever observe your own specific ways, mannerisms and tics?
If you are unaware of them, you will probably bring them unintentionally to ALL the characters you play. Self-study is essential for actors, getting to know your own instrument (body/voice) so you can have control over what part of YOU to bring to a character and what parts of YOU to leave out.
Now try this:
Step 1: Ask your closest friends, colleagues or family members if they can share with you kindly, what they see as your habits, tics and mannerisms. Write them down, what is it, how often does it occur? Do you have the tic more often in a certain state of mind? Let’s always assume their observations are true until proven otherwise.
Step 2: observe yourself, become aware and study yourself as you were the character, can you observe the tics/mannerisms they described to you? Write down your own observations.
Step 3: One tic/mannerism at a time, if you are aware of that specific tic, see if you can work against it, leave it away for first an hour, then extend it to even a whole day. See if you can relax yourself each time you feel slipping back in to that tic or mannerism. Practice, practice, practice.
Step 4: Let us know what tics or mannerisms you came across and how did it go getting rid of them even for a little bit?

Do you struggle to create a bass line that sounds full and deep❓❓
👉Try this: Experiment with transposing some of the oscillators one octave up or down (+12 or -12 semitones) to create a fuller bass sound. Add the SUB oscillator to create even more body to your bass sound.
👍Like this post if you like more free tips on Music Production and Acting!

🐺 🐺🐺 Be in the moment! Experience this scene as if it is the first time!
UHHH… YEAH… SURE!!! BUT HOW?
There are many tools you can use to stay in the moment while acting a scene. One of them is this. If you notice your thoughts are drifting away or you are anticipating what is to come. Just take a moment to take a breath, (Your character needs to breath too right?) your breath can be used as an Anker to pull you back into the present moment. What’s your trick to stay in the moment? Or have you tried the breathing tool before? Let us know in the comments.

👉What's the difference between saturation and distortion? How do you differentiate between saturation, harmonics, distortion, overdrive and clipping? Are all of these just similar terms with different names? When should we use one of these versus the other?
👉In the most general sense, distortion is the result of any process that alters a sound's waveform. Saturation, overdrive and fuzz are all words used to describe 'flavours' of distortion.
👉Saturation makes a quite versatile mixing tool. Its compression-like nature means that you can use it to add warmth to individual sounds. It’s great for fattening up the low-end. It’s also very useful on buses as mix 'glue' and great at adding size to a mix.
👉Distortion creates a more flat type of clipping, generates harmonic content and generally breaks down a signal. For these reasons, it’s great for adding aggression or presence to any sound.
👉Don’t just limit its use to electric instruments, use it to add character in the strangest of places.
👉As DAW's are inherently “cold” and “empty” places to make music in, it can take a lot of processing to make a sound interesting and pleasing to the ear because harsh, simple and one-dimensional sounds (like the ones that come straight out of sample packs and synths) don’t always sound that great. Saturating and distorting things can bring them to life and add fatness, richness, size and sparkle to elements which otherwise sounded flat and lifeless.
⚠️Be careful though: over-processing your sounds with saturation and distortion can lead to a cluttered mix, so use it selectively. Adjust the output of your effects to make sure the perceived output level is the same as the input level, to properly judge if you are actually improving the sound or just making it louder. And remember, always let your ears be the final judge!

In our opinion Art is not just a hobby, of course it CAN be for people, and that is great and good for so many things but also Art, whether it’s Music, Film, Photography or other forms of Art is a way to shine a light on things that are important, to enhance communication, a way of making people understand things which can’t be done verbally.
Great artist are also teachers of the people mostly without the people knowing they’re being taught. Let’s use Art to make the world a better place for all human beings! And always use our voice to speak up!
If you like, share one experience how Art taught you something or at least made you think about something you haven’t really thought of before…

“Artists are the gatekeepers of truth. We are civilization’s anchor. We are the compass for humanity’s conscience.”
— Harry Belafonte
