Even world champions have doubts.

In the latest episode of our Love the Fan, Win the Game podcast, host Brigette McGuire is joined by 2024 Olympic and World Champion Grace Brown OAM, who recounts an emotional phone call home when she told her parents she didn't think she was meant to be a professional cyclist.

"That was a really tough year because the level between Australia and Europe, you go from racing maybe a bunch of 50 women in Australia to suddenly being in a peloton of 120–150," Grace says.

"The European riders are really used to being shoulder to shoulder, bumping each other, racing for corners … it's quite full-on. I struggled through those few months racing in Europe.

"I remember distinctively a phone call home to my parents saying, 'I don't think this is for me. I don't think that I'm cut out to be a professional cyclist, it's all too hard' … but when I came back, I realised how much I'd grown from that experience."

Grace and Brigette cover a wide range of topics across sport and business, including Grace's rise from a competitive and active younger sister to world champion cyclist and successful businesswoman.

Our Love the Fan, Win the Game podcast explores topics to help students sail to success, with the latest ep being a great example.

John Bertrand AO, skipper of 1983 America's Cup winner Australia II, and host Brigette McGuire discuss a variety of topics, including the importance of play, how 10,000 hours of "perfect practice" can lead to intuition, and how this applies to students.

"If you're a student of a subject, you become very, very good because you love what you're doing," John says.

"The 10,000 hours of perfect practice, it's a very interesting concept … if you build up that knowledge base, then you can make decisions which are a pretty high level of being right via this thing called intuition.

"We're seeing that in the sports world where you've got these athletes doing amazing stuff and they wouldn't know how they did it."

The latest guest on our Love the Fan, Win the Game podcast led a team to break the longest winning streak in sporting history.

John Bertrand AO, skipper of 1983 America's Cup winner Australia II and Chairman of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, can size up a leader in under five minutes.

So what does a world champion like John actually look for? He says the people at the top level have the ability to attract others to support them.

"They're good people to hang out with," he says. "The best of the best is just a interesting case study of human profiling."
