We have kicked off our Monday Mystery Reader in the Elementary library! These cozy after school sessions bring parents and students together for story-time, presented by a new mystery reader each week.

As part of our focus on literacy this year, we’re opening up more opportunities for families to be part of what’s happening in our library, and help make reading an every greater focus throughout our community.

Growing up between different cultures can bring unique opportunities, but it can also create questions and internal conflicts as young people navigate different values, expectations and identities.

At our latest Parent Partnership session, Dr. Vy shared insights into these experiences and explored how parents and schools can better understand, prepare and support young people as they grow up in multicultural environments.

The discussion offered practical perspectives on wellbeing, identity and the ways we can help young people navigate the world.

This year, SSIS Athletics formally launched its Student Coach Program, giving students in Grades 8–12 the opportunity to support our younger teams.

More than 90 students applied for the first season. Those selected recently came together for their first student coach meeting, where they learned about their roles and expectations, signed their student coach agreements, and received their student coach shirts.

It’s an opportunity for older students to take on responsibility, support younger athletes, and develop their leadership through sport.

When we ask parents which topics they want to explore in future Parent Partnership sessions, one clear area of interest is always practical ways to support children at home.

Our latest ES session, presented by our Literacy Coordinator, EAL Coordinator, and librarian, brought various perspectives on reading.

At school, students are learning to connect ideas across different texts, synthesize information, draw conclusions and ask thoughtful questions. Through classroom discussions, group routines and reading clubs, students move beyond quizzes and recall deeper, more critical thinking about what they read.

At home, it can be much simpler. Talking about books, asking what someone thinks, sharing a recommendation or simply letting children see adults enjoying reading, can all help create positive associations.

A part of the session also brought several lovely stories from parents regarding their relationship to reading, and books that have stayed with them.

With a simple question, we can all contribute to instilling a love of literature in our communities, and we’ll start here: What are you reading?

As part of their first Super Unit, Understanding Ourselves, our Grade 4 students explored this question through a Decision Makers Summit designed to help them think about the choices they make every day.

With presenters from across the SSIS community including our Activities Director, counselors, Education Technology team, and school leadership, as well as teachers and staff from across campus students moved between sessions focused on healthy food choices, positive body image, AI, online conversations, and risk-taking.

Each session gave them an opportunity to ask questions, consider different perspectives, and think about how their decisions can shape their wellbeing and the way they interact with the world around them.

It was a great example of learning extending beyond the classroom, with members of our wider school community sharing their knowledge and helping students make sense of the decisions they face every day.

What happens when Science is something students can see, test, and experience for themselves?

That's what our Middle School scientists discovered, using salt, eggs and water to conduct their own investigations.

In a hands-on lab, students compared what happened to the eggs in different solutions, learning about density, buoyancy, and how changes in a solution can affect an object.

When teachers make room for students to question and discover, they are truly brining Science to life and making sure that learning doesn’t just stay in their textbooks!

Friday Night Lights are back at SSIS and this year, we’re shining under our brand-new flood lights.

The campus comes alive after hours with action on the field, hotdogs on the grill, families on the sidelines, and friends catching up as they cheer on our teams. It’s a chance for our community to come together and for our young people to have a place to meet, play, and spend time with friends.

Our Grade 2 and Grade 12 Buddy Program is officially underway.

Their first meeting marks the beginning of a year-long connection, with regular opportunities for our youngest learners and seniors to spend time together, have fun, and build a relationship across the grades.

For Grade 2 students, these connections create a sense of belonging and give them an older student to look up to.

For our Grade 12s, it is an opportunity to reflect on their own younger years, share what they have learned, and see the school experience through a very different perspective.

Across SSIS, Curriculum Nights gave parents in all divisions an opportunity to connect with their children's teachers, learn more about the year ahead, and get a closer look at what learning looks like in the classroom.

For our EC–Grade 5 families, the evening was a chance to understand how our Super Units provide the broad strokes for learning throughout the year. Each unit provides countless opportunities for students to explore, question, create, collaborate, and develop new skills.

Because for parents, knowing what your child is learning is only part of the picture. Understanding how they are learning, why it matters, and how you can support them along the way helps make the connection between home and school even stronger.
