I am a holder of a Zimbabwe passport. At the age of 52, I started a new career in teaching which has opened a world of opportunities for me.
Before I started teaching ESL, I had watched various videos available on YouTube, from ESL teaching tips, the whats and nots to do, to visa and work permit requirements. I then packed my bags and went to Cambodia thinking that I had armed myself with the necessary information only to be stuck at the airport for more than an hour for reasons not mentioned in the videos I watched. But what really happened? Perhaps they are in a different situation than I am in. Their passports are more travel-friendly.
After securing a job, it was still like walking on a thin glass because people give you different information. The policies also change from time to time.
I decided to move to Vietnam as the pay is substantially higher than what I was paid in Cambodia (with less work) . I applied for the visa at the Consulate, and with the stroke of luck, I was granted a three-month visa. The next visa application wasn't so simple. I was granted a month stay only. I went on again trying to make a plan or find one. I've searched various websites and they looked promising but what they promised isn't what they can actually deliver. I've talked to different agents and have been turned down as they have said that I have a difficult passport.
Finally a plan has been made and I can make long term plans here in Vietnam.
Prior to embarking on this ESL teaching journey, I enrolled in a 120-hour TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) course online and that was qualification enough for me to pick up teaching jobs.
I have a lot of free time but still earning a decent salary. On top of that, I am able to travel, socialize and meet incredibly interesting people from all corners of the globe.
I am currently residing in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and working at a language center and public school. If your desire is to come to Viet Nam or Cambodia, I will gladly be of assistance in helping you get started. We’d also love to meet up with you in Ho Chi Minh City and be of whatever assistance we can be.
As a holder of a Zimbabwe passport, I have met challenges along the way. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through all the hassles I have gone through, so I want to help you prepare for your journey.
