๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿงฎ Topic content - A Level Math - CIE - Mechanics

Topic 1 - Forces and equilibrium

โœ๏ธ Topic 1 of the A Level Math Mechanics (CIE) course helps students develop a solid understanding of forces and how they balance. After completing this topic, students will:

1 โ€“ Identify the different forces acting on an object in various situations.

2 โ€“ Understand that force is a vector (meaning it has both size and direction), and be able to find and use the parts of a force (called components) as well as the combined force (called the resultant).

3 โ€“ Use the principle that when an object is not moving or is balanced (in equilibrium), the total of all forces acting on it adds up to zero. This means the sum of the forces in any direction is zero.

4 โ€“ Know that the force between two touching surfaces has two parts: one pushing directly between them (the normal force), and one that acts sideways to resist sliding (the frictional force).

5 โ€“ Use the idea of a โ€˜smoothโ€™ surface where there is no friction, and understand when this simple model might not work well.

6 โ€“ Understand limiting friction (the maximum friction before motion starts), know what the coefficient of friction means, and use the formula that links friction force to the normal force by this coefficient.

7 โ€“ Apply Newtonโ€™s third law, which says that for every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.

Topic 5 - The normal distribution

โœ๏ธ Topic 5 of the A Level Math Probability and Statistics 1 (CIE) course helps students understand how to work with the normal distribution to model real-world data. After completing this topic, students will:

1 โ€“ Understand how the normal distribution can be used to describe continuous random variables, and learn how to use normal distribution tables to find probabilities.

2 โ€“ Solve problems involving a variable X that follows a normal distribution with a given mean and variance. This includes: finding the probability that X is greater than a certain value, and finding connections between the value, mean, and variance when given a probability.

3 โ€“ Remember when it is appropriate to use the normal distribution as an approximation for the binomial distribution, and use this method (including a continuity correction) to solve problems.

Topic 4 - Discrete random variables

โœ๏ธ Topic 4 of the A Level Math Probability and Statistics 1 (CIE) course helps students understand how to work with random variables that take specific values. After completing this topic, students will:

1 โ€“ Create a table showing all possible values of a discrete random variable (called X) along with their probabilities, and calculate the expected value (which is like the average) and the variance (which measures how spread out the values are).
2 โ€“ Use the formulas for finding probabilities in the binomial and geometric distributions, and learn to identify real-life situations where these types of probability models fit well.
3 โ€“ Use the formulas to calculate the expected value and variance for the binomial distribution, and the expected value for the geometric distribution.

Topic 3 - Probability

โœ๏ธ Topic 3 of the A Level Math Probability and Statistics 1 (CIE) course helps students develop a clear understanding of probability. After completing this topic, students will:

1 โ€“ Find probabilities in simple situations by listing all possible equally likely outcomes or by using methods to count arrangements or selections, such as permutations or combinations.

2 โ€“ Use the rules for adding and multiplying probabilities correctly when solving basic probability problems.

3 โ€“ Understand what it means for events to be exclusive (cannot happen at the same time) and independent (the outcome of one does not affect the other). They will also learn how to check if two events are independent by comparing certain probability values.

4 โ€“ Calculate and apply conditional probabilities, which means finding the chance of one event happening given that another event has already happened, in simple situations.
