A Talk with the author of Hanoi's War!

Topic: Researching Socialist Vietnam: A Historian's Life and Career with Professor Liên Hằng

If you had taken courses at Fulbright about modern Vietnam or the Vietnam War, Hanoi's War was a required for many of the syllabi. This week, you will have an opportunity to talk to the author - Professor Liên Hằng - on our campus! The talk will focus less on the academic work, but more about the world behind that - the research work, the life, and the career of a historian of modern Vietnam since the Socialist era.

Professor Nguyễn Thị Liên Hằng specializes in the study of the United States in the world, with spatial focus on Southeast Asia and temporal interest in the Cold War. She is currently working on two projects. The first is a comprehensive history of the 1968 Tet Offensive and the second explores the role of gender, people’s diplomacy, and transnational networks of antiwar activism during the Vietnam War. She is the author of Hanoi’s War: An International History of the War for Peace in Vietnam. She is also a member of our University's Board of Trustees.

Professor Hang will share about her experiences conducting research in Vietnam for Hanoi's War, with a special focus on the history of the Vietnamese Communist Party and the Vietnam War from the Communist perspectives. She will give insights about her navigation of the Vietnamese archives since the opening up of the country, as well as the challenges posed to her life and work as a historian. The talk will be a chance to understand the profession of an academic historian from both personal and professional dimensions, as well as to hear about her current and upcoming works, especially her ongoing book project about Tet Mau than 1968.

In this talk, Prof. Tuong Vu will discuss recent studies on republicanism sponsored by the US-Vietnam Research Center at the University of Oregon. Historians of Vietnam have increasingly paid attention to republicanism as an ideology and a form of politics in modern Vietnam. The two conferences in Berkeley (2016) and in Eugene (2019) have resulted in four edited volumes that not only showcase the latest research but also offer a more systematic examination of the phenomenon from colonial to postcolonial period, and from South Vietnam to the diaspora.

🔹 About the speaker:
Tuong Vu (PhD, Berkeley) is Professor of Political Science and Director of the US-Vietnam Research Center at the University of Oregon. He has held visiting appointments at Seoul National University, Princeton University, and National University of Singapore, and has taught at the Naval Postgraduate School. Vu is the author or co-editor of nine books, including: Republican Vietnam, 1963-1975: War, Society, Diaspora (Hawaii, 2023); Building a Republican Nation in Vietnam, 1920-1963 (Hawaii, 2022) and Vietnam’s Communist Revolution: The Power and Limits of Ideology (Cambridge, 2017). He has also authored numerous articles and book chapters on the politics of nationalism, communism, revolution, and state-building in East and Southeast Asia. He serves on the editorial or advisory boards of several journals such as Pacific Affairs, Journal of East Asian Studies, and International Journal of Asian Studies.

The echoes of a war that ended over four decades ago continue to resonate hauntingly in the memories of those who lived on both sides of the frontlines. "Fragments of Memory" is a poignant tale from a moving VTV broadcast in 2022. Directed by Lê Hoàng Linh, this documentary sheds light on the harrowing experiences of war heroes and martyrs, revealing the lingering pain felt on both sides.

Follow the arduous journey of American veterans, especially those from the 1st Cavalry Division, who played a pivotal role in the burial of soldiers at the Xuân Sơn battle site in December 1966. Over half a century later, learn about their mission to assist the military command of Bình Định province in locating the mass grave they once established.

These American veterans' haunting memories of war are vividly brought to life on screen. As young men, they ventured into unfamiliar territory, scarcely comprehending the profound implications of the war, only to be immediately confronted by its brutal realities. Delve into their personal battles and their unyielding quest for closure.

It has been a week since last Monday, when we had the honor to welcome Professor David Marr, a veteran historian of modern Vietnam, to our Crescent campus. The discussion was in-depth and vibrant about his years in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, both as an officer and later as a scholar.

The session concluded with a visit to the FUV Library, where the books he had donated are and will soon be put in use. We hope to express deepest appreciation to the faculty members for having organized this event, and to Society members that had participated, as well as the guests. The questions and discussions had immensely contributed to the success of the event.

For those of you who had taken Modern Vietnamese Culture and Society, you would be familiar with writings authored by Professor David Marr. Professor David Marr is a renowned historian of modern Vietnam at Australian National University. He had published numerous chapters and articles on the topic, especially with regards to the emergence of Vietnamese nationalism, anti-colonialism, and the August Revolution. He is also a generous donor for our library, with thousands of titles having been donated from his personal collection.

This Monday, we will welcome Professor David Marr to our campus. He will be talking about his years in Vietnam, first as an American Marine officer, then as a scholar, in the 1960s. The specific details of the event are as the following:
