IMAGINE, IMAGE, IMAGINATION are three words that a lot of learners confuse when speaking English. For today’s English lesson, let’s have a look at the difference between these words and then some example sentences to see how they are used.

HERE ARE THE EXAMPLE SENTENCES

IMAGINE: tưởng tượng (động từ)

- I imagine visiting a tropical island must be nice.

- Can you imagine what you would do if you won the lottery?
Jack said Vegas was better than he imagined.

IMAGE: Hình ảnh (danh từ)

- I still have the image of her face in my mind.

- His stories are so detailed; you can really get a good image of the situation.

- Let’s use these three images for the brochure.

IMAGINATION: sự tưởng tượng (danh từ)

- Those kids have vivid imaginations.

- Imagination is the key to creativity.

- Use your imagination and tell me a story about a far away land.

The phrasal verb TURN UP has a few different meanings and uses. Let’s learn this useful English vocabulary in today’s lesson.

HERE ARE THE EXAMPLE SENTENCES

We use turn up to mean increase the volume or level. The opposite of turn up is turn down. Anything that has an up/down adjustment can be turned up or turned down.

TURN UP: VẶN TO LÊN

- Turn up the radio. I love this song.
- Can you turn up the heat? It’s a little cold in here
- If you turn up the gas on the stove, the water will boil faster.
- I asked him twice to turn down the air conditioner, but it’s still cold in this room.

TURN UP: ĐẾN

* Turn up is also used to mean to arrive.

Brad turned up late for work and the boss was really angry.
I hope Jenny will come to the party. Everyone will be happy if she turns up.
I waited for Jack for over an hour, but he never turned up. I wonder what happened.

Lastly, turn upcan be used to mean “discover” or “result in” or “is found”

The police investigation turned up new clues about the murder.
I hope my lost wallet turns up at the reception desk.
Don’t worry about your cat. I am sure she will turn up soon.

Still & Yet can be tricky to use for many English learners. Let’s have a look at how these two adverbs are used in English.

HERE ARE THE EXAMPLE SENTENCES

We use still when we want to show that some situation started in the past and continues to now. We use still in positive sentences and questions like this:

- It was warm yesterday and it is still warm today.
- I was born in New York and I still live here.
- I remember you played tennis in high school. Do you still play?

* We use yet when we want to refer to something that did not happen before now, but we think or know it will happen in the future. We use yet in negative sentences and questions like this:

- It’s warm outside, but it is not summer yet.
- My friends tell me I have not grown up yet.
- I went to Vietnam once, but I haven’t been back yet.
