VINUNIVERSITY & APRU: TURNING VIETNAMโS REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES INTO RESEARCH WITH REGIONAL IMPACT
(Tiแบฟng Viแปt dฦฐแปi phแบงn bรฌnh luแบญn)
How can Vietnamโs real-world development challenges be translated into research with regional and global relevance?
This question lies at the heart of โs journey as the first Vietnamese member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).
During โs recent visit to VinUni, the discussion moved beyond institutional membership. It focused on how VinUni can leverage practical insights, large-scale datasets, and applied innovation to advance collaborative research across the Asia-Pacific.
Key areas of potential research collaboration include:
๐ท AI for impact: Implementing AI to drive social impact and innovation.
๐ท Green transformation: Practical strategies for the transition to electric vehicles and clean energy.
๐ท Sustainable smart cities: Master plans for urban development.
๐ท Global health: Digital health records of patients and genomic data.
As Dr. Le Mai Lan, President of the University Council, shared: โVinUni is a place of transformation. We think far and big, and we have the capabilities to create changes and contribute.โ
APRU described VinUni as a โspeedboatโ: a young, agile institution with the ability to move quickly from ideas to action. In research, this agility can become a distinctive advantage, enabling VinUni to connect disciplines, mobilize partnerships, and translate real-world problems into knowledge with broader relevance.
Through APRU, VinUni aims to contribute Vietnamโs practical development experience to wider academic conversations, while strengthening international research collaboration on shared challenges across the Asia-Pacific.

Drawing from President Dr. Le Mai Lanโs keynote on โScaling Asiaโs Tech Innovation into Global Blueprintsโ at the THE Asia Universities Summit 2026, one of the regionโs most influential higher education forums, our president goes straight to the core question: Asia now accounts for nearly half of global R&D. But why hasnโt it produced more globally adopted innovation models?
She looks at it from a few angles:
- When does โdensityโ talent, capital, data, manufacturing become a real advantage, and when does it turn into a bottleneck?
- What is still holding Asia back: fragmented systems, weak research, industry - talent linkages, a local-first mindset, or limited influence in setting global standards?
- What role should universities play, not just as educators, but as system orchestrators?
- How can ecosystems like Vingroup and VinUni help shift from fast follower to system builder?
The message is clear, but not simplistic:
- Asia has no shortage of capability.
- The real question is how we can better integrate talent, capital, data, research, and industry and turn them into innovations that travel beyond local markets.

VinUniversity is pleased to announce that its Bachelor of Nursing program has been granted initial accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) this 30th April, becoming the first nursing program in Vietnam to achieve this distinction.
ACEN is a specialized accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). It evaluates programs against comprehensive standards covering curriculum, faculty qualifications, clinical training, student outcomes, and institutional support - standards applied equally to both domestic and international programs.
๐ Program Highlights
The accreditation reflects the quality of a program developed through a close partnership with the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, one of the worldโs leading institutions in nursing education. Key strengths include:
๐ An internationally recognized faculty team with a 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and a strong global academic network of 18 leading strategic partners worldwide
๐A competency-based curriculum emphasizing evidence-based practice, leadership development, and a global healthcare mindset, where students have extensive placement opportunities at top-tier private and major national hospitals, such as the Vinmec Health Care System, Bach Mai Hospital, 108 Military Central Hospital, Viet Duc University Hospital, Hanoi Oncology Hospital, Hanoi Mental Hospital, and the National Geriatric Hospital
๐Advanced simulation laboratories replicating real-world clinical environments
๐Strong emphasis on producing graduates prepared for both clinical excellence and healthcare leadership roles
This achievement is the result of deliberate, sustained effort since the programโs inception. By aligning with ACEN standards from the outset, VinUniversity demonstrates its commitment to transparency, continuous quality improvement, and international benchmarking in health sciences education.
This milestone contributes to a broader effort to strengthen the pipeline of highly trained nursing professionals in Vietnam, where demand for internationally benchmarked healthcare training continues to grow. It also reflects a shift toward aligning local education models with global quality frameworks while maintaining relevance to emerging healthcare systems.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the University of Pennsylvania for their partnership, to our dedicated faculty and clinical partners, and to the entire VinUniversity community whose collective effort made this possible.

VinUni leadership revealed 's โbold betโ to put Vietnamese research on the world map within ten years under the big quest โIs Asia the next science superpower?โ at THE Asia Universities Summit 2026
(Tiแบฟng viแปt แป phแบงn bรฌnh luแบญn)
At THE Asia Universities Summit 2026, Dr. Le Mai Lan, President of the University Council at VinUniversity, joined leaders from Times Higher Education, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Springer Nature Group to tackle a defining question: What will truly determine Asiaโs scientific future?
To conquer this big question, bold ideas on the below matters were critically discussed:
1. Quantity vs. Quality? What distinguishes agenda-setting science from high-volume research?
2. Which institutional incentives enable originality rather than replication?
3. How should universities and governments protect openness and trust under geopolitical strain?
4. What is a โbold betโ of VinUni to put Vietnamese research on the world map ten years from now?
5. What is one habit or mindset that Asian universities need to โunlearnโ in order to stop just following and start leading?
A range of sharp perspectives was brought into the dialogue, converging on a clear message that Asiaโs scientific future will depend less on its potential and more on how effectively institutions, researchers, and policymakers translate that potential into sustained action. Within this, Dr. Mai Lan reveals VinUni's 2 key factors and the unique university-industry integration model to work towards our great ambition to bring Vietnam to the global academic map.

VinUniversity recently welcomed a delegation of students from the Global Immersion - Impact MBA program at Nyenrode Business University (Netherlands). Focused on the management theory and regional economic practice, the program at VinUni offered international students a diverse range of high-impact activities:
๐ฑ Engaging in academic sessions on Vietnamโs economy, Vingroup ecosystem, and the role of technology in Southeast Asia with VinUniโs faculty.
๐ฑ Visiting major corporations and key industrial hubs, including VinFast, VinaTech, Deep C and Damen Song Cam to gain insights into manufacturing, international joint ventures, and global supply chains.
๐ฑ Joining direct dialogue on diplomacy and bilateral cooperation with distinguished diplomat HE Kees van Baar the Ambassador of the Netherlands in Vietnam and international industry experts.
It is easy to talk about globalization as a connection or about Vietnam as a rising dynamic economy. The more difficult work is understanding transformation in systems, in assumptions, in pace, in ambition. In such an intuitive immersion to Vietnam and to VinUni, we believe โlearningโ shifts inside our Nyenrode MBA students!

VinUni was delighted to welcome inbound residents from the UCSF through the Visiting Student Program in Vietnam - Dr. Khambouneheuang Lucky P. and Dr. Ghaznavi Cyrus M., both currently pursuing their Internal Medicine Residency at UCSF. Through this program, the residents were immersed in Vietnamโs healthcare system, gaining hands-on exposure and clinical insights across both public and private hospital settings - from the international-standard environment at Vinmec Times City International Hospital to the high-volume, specialized care at 108 Military Central Hospital.
Their rotation was thoughtfully designed to provide a holistic view of inpatient care in Vietnam. The residents had the opportunity to rotate across multiple departments, including infectious diseases, intensive care, emergency care, cardiology, and internal medicine. A key highlight of the program was the contrast between healthcare systems, offering valuable perspectives on how public and private institutions operate differently in terms of resources, patient flow, and care delivery. Throughout their journey, the residents were closely supported by VinUni resident doctors, who not only facilitated clinical learning but also helped bridge cultural and language gaps. Both residents gained valuable clinical insights and cross-cultural experiences.
Dr. Ghaznavi Cyrus M. and Dr. Khambouneheuang Lucky P., Internal Medicine Residents from UCSF, reflected on their experience at VinUni. โI had the opportunity to learn about infectious disease management, including treating conditions rarely seen in the U.S.,โ shared Dr. Cyrus, while Dr. Lucky added, โMy clinical observation was an amazing experience, especially the meaningful discussions comparing different healthcare systems.โ From clinical exposure to cross-cultural exchange, the program continues to foster global collaboration and mutual learning across borders.
