The picture illustrates how much oil was produced and consumed in China on a daily basis from 1982 to 2006.
Overall, there were rises in oil production and consumption in China over the period shown. The consumption of oil exceeded the oil production in 1995. Additionally, the gap expanded more and more largely toward the end of the period shown.
In 1982, China produced about 2,1 about millions of oil barrels per day (MB/D), which was higher than the figure for oil consumption, with around 1,9 MB/D. The former increased to 3 MB/D in 1986, after which it remained unchanged 8 years later; meanwhile the latter was stable until 1990 and then increased remarkably to 3,5 MB/D for 4 years. In 1994, the amount of oil produced and consumed was the same at 3MB/D.
Over the following 4 years, the oil consumption witnessed a significant increase, which constituted at 4 MB/D. However, China only produced 3,1 MB/D in this period. The number of oil production climbed significantly and reached a peak to 6,5 MB/D in comparison with the figure for oil consumption increased to 3,5 MB/D from 1998 to 2006.
