Some people think that children nowadays have too much freedom. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Essay:
It is believed that children today have an excessive amount of freedom. I partly agree with this opinion.
It is true that children have too much freedom in the sense that they can access the Internet and use social media with little supervision from their parents. Nowadays, parents are often occupied with various work and life commitments, so they may give their children a smart device, such as an iPhone or iPad, to keep them entertained. Although the Internet contains a great deal of useful information, it also contains inappropriate content. If children are exposed to such material, it can be detrimental to their development. For example, a young boy may come across violent footage on social media and become interested in it, potentially developing violent behaviour later in life. In the past, parents strictly controlled the information and media that their children accessed, which helped prevent exposure to harmful content. This comparison shows that children’s freedom to access information nowadays may be excessive.
However, I would argue that in other aspects, children today have less freedom than they used to. Due to increasing competition, children are often compelled by their parents to study harder and attend various extra classes after school. As a result, they have little free time at their disposal. This situation may continue throughout their childhood and into their teenage years. For instance, a high school student in Vietnam is usually free for only two to three hours per day after school and extra classes. By contrast, children in the past often had much longer periods without academic commitments, during which they could freely hang out with their friends or explore their neighbourhoods. This was particularly important in helping them develop independence and social skills. In this regard, it can be argued that children today have less freedom than they need.
In conclusion, although children today may have more freedom to access social media, they tend to enjoy less freedom in their daily lives due to academic pressure and parental expectations. Children should be taught to distinguish right from wrong when consuming Internet content, and education systems should allow them to achieve a better balance between study and leisure.
