It can be admiration that is felt and/or shown toward someone/something that is believed to be good and excellent. For example, you respect your boss for his deep knowledge.
It might also be acceptance of something different from your perspective. For example, you respect someone's viewpoint and decision without necessarily agreeing with it.
In some viewpoints, respect is something that must be earned, whereas others view it as something we should give to everyone.
