🇫🇷 Cette photo a été prise en 1842 lors des funérailles du duc d’Orléans, Ferdinand, fils du roi Louis-Philippe Ier. Il était un prince populaire parce qu’il soutenait les nouvelles idées et se souciait de la classe ouvrière. Malheureusement, le 13 juillet, il se trouvait dans un carrosse découvert à Paris lorsque les chevaux se sont emballés. Il tomba du véhicule et fut grièvement blessé. Il mourut le jour même, à seulement 31 ans.
Les funérailles eurent lieu le 30 juillet 1842 à la cathédrale Notre-Dame. Pour la cérémonie, toute la façade de la cathédrale fut recouverte de draperies noires de deuil, de symboles royaux et de grandes décorations. En observant attentivement, on peut distinguer une foule immense, des soldats en formation, et même le cortège funèbre arrivant sur place.
Mais ce qui rend cette photo vraiment historique, c’est qu’elle serait la plus ancienne photographie connue de Notre-Dame — et l’une des toutes premières photos jamais prises d’un événement public en France. Elle fut réalisée à l’aide d’un daguerréotype, l’une des toutes premières techniques photographiques. Ce procédé produisait des images sur une plaque recouverte d’argent et nécessitait un long temps de pose.

🇺🇸 This photo was taken in 1842 during the funeral of the Duke of Orléans, Ferdinand, the son of King Louis-Philippe I. He was a popular prince because he supported new ideas and cared about the working class. Sadly, on July 13, he was riding in an open carriage in Paris when the horses were startled. He fell out and suffered fatal injuries. He died the same day at just 31 years old.
The funeral was held on July 30, 1842, at Notre-Dame Cathedral. For the ceremony, the entire front of the cathedral was covered in dark mourning fabric, royal symbols, and large decorations. If you look closely, you can see a huge crowd, soldiers in formation, and even the funeral carriage arriving.
But there’s something else that makes this photo historic: it’s believed to be the oldest known photo of Notre-Dame — and one of the earliest photos ever taken of a public event in France. It was made using a daguerreotype, one of the very first photography methods. This process created images on a silver-coated plate and required long exposure times.
