This House Believes That (THBT) the media should not report on the private lives of public figures

From splashy headlines on the news to the buzz on social media, public figures and their lives have always been in the center of public attention. This means that regardless of their occupation, politicians and celebrities' private lives are explored in detail, often against their will.

Today, Pro and Con will discuss whether the media should report on the private lives of public figures.

Another spectacular performance!

Point Avenue had the pleasure of sending Quoc-An Ton, a student from our advanced debate class to compete alongside a D-Doxa member in Vietnam BP Championship for middle and high school students, organized by Wellspring Hanoi International Bilingual School 🗣🇬🇧🏆

Point Avenue team finished breaking 13th out of 36 teams, with Quoc-An making us proud ranking in the Top 15 best speakers. Vietnam BP Championship marked both team members' first BP debate tournament, and we couldn't be more pleased with the student's efforts and results 🙌

Adjudicators representing Point Avenue also had great success. Coach Travis Loreman and coach Hyewon Rho both ranked in the top 5 best adjudicators.

Huge thanks to Quoc-An's family, who brought us delicious snacks to encourage us during the tournament. Also, thank you, D-Doxa for fun spar sessions as well as Phuong-An Cao for being an awesome teammate! We look forward to future collaboration 🤝

Last Sunday, Point Avenue hosted our 2nd debate workshop about "How to Debate Truly Awful Motions." It was a resounding success; students of all ages attended and learned strategic tips to use in preparation time for motions that are either trivial, terrible, impossible, and/or bizarre 🗣

In the first hour, Travis Loreman, Point Avenue's debate coach, spoke on how to handle the four categories of awful motions. The following hour, the attendees put their newfound skills to the test by preparing arguments for motions from each category.

If you wish to compete in tournaments or want to further develop your debate skills, the Point Avenue Wordsmiths Society welcomes all skill levels to join our program! Contact us through our email [email protected], or directly message us on Facebook at m.me/PointAvenue 📩

Wow, what a week!

Our students had the pleasure of competing with the best debaters from around the world at the 5th Asian World Schools Debating Championship 2019. We had the opportunity to debate against WSDC national debate teams like WSDC Team Qatar 🇶🇦 and WSDC Team Pakistan 🇵🇰.

Our students never stopped fighting and showed tremendous growth in their critical thinking 🤔, speaking 🗣 and confidence. The Point Avenue team walked away from the tournament with an abundance of constructive feedback on how to improve from both experienced international adjudicators and debaters.

Point Avenue would like to thank the organizers of the AWSDC and the Anglo Singapore International School for hosting such a great competition. We couldn’t have asked for a better tournament, and we look forward to returning in 2021.
