That is why collaboration between ministries, universities, hospitals, laboratories, and international networks is not optional; it is the foundation of health security.

We are therefore proud to have successfully concluded the 5-day PACE-UP Regional Workshop on Emerging Infectious Diseases and Biosafety Preparedness in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 🌏🔬

The final day focused on Biosafety training, including practical exercises on laboratory biosafety, PPE use, safe handling of infectious materials, and outbreak preparedness. Participants completed assessments and written examinations, earning certifications that recognize their competencies and commitment to strengthening preparedness for emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats.

Congratulations to all participants, and thank you to the faculty, facilitators, and partners from PACE-UP, DAAD Vietnam, DAAD Global Health Centres, World Health Organization (WHO), GOARN - Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, University of Malaya, Universiti Malaya Affordable Diagnostics and Therapeutics (UMADT) collaborating institutions for making this workshop a success. 🤝

On May 19th, 2026, the VG-CARE Mobile Laboratory deployed to the Endangered Primates Rescue Center (EPRC) at Cuc Phuong National Park to support zoonotic disease surveillance among occupationally exposed staff working closely with endangered primates.

In addition to screening for zoonotic infectious diseases, occupational exposure risks were identified as well as local EPRC staff training in sample handling, processing and molecular diagnostic methods. Future research will also include primate screening to better understand zoonotic transmission risks at the human-animal interface.

In our recent perspective, we discuss the clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiological challenges raised by the Andes virus-associated hantavirus cluster-linked outbreak onboard the MV Hondius expedition cruise ship.

We highlight the unique characteristics of the Andes virus and its documented potential for limited person-to-person transmission during close and prolonged contact. The article also explores the critical preparedness gaps in managing rare zoonotic infections in mobile, closed, and medically constrained settings.

We are pleased to share that the DAAD Journal has featured the mobile laboratory of the DAAD-funded Global Centre for Health and Pandemic Prevention PACE-UP.

The article, titled “𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘧𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘨𝘦𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘦𝘬𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘯: 𝘔𝘪𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘮 𝘮𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘯𝘢𝘮”, highlights the role of the PACE-UP mobile laboratory as an effective tool for rapid outbreak response, field-based diagnostics, and pandemic preparedness. The mobile laboratory strengthens local and regional capacities by enabling diagnostic services closer to affected communities and supporting rapid detection of infectious disease threats.

This recognition by DAAD underlines the importance of PACE-UP’s work in advancing equitable access to diagnostics, strengthening outbreak preparedness, and building sustainable health research capacity across partner countries.
