In Vietnamese culture, the Kitchen Gods, known as Ông Công and Ông Táo, hold a special place of reverence and affection. According to tradition, these gods oversee the household and report on the family's affairs to the Jade Emperor, the highest deity in Vietnamese folklore, once a year. This annual journey occurs on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, just before Tết, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.
Legend has it that the Kitchen Gods ride carps to deliver their report to the Jade Emperor.
