✨ [Recap] Cultural Outreach English Club - Topic: Ancestor Worship: The Heart of Vietnamese Culture ✨
Last sunday, English Explorer came together at a cozy café for a meaningful Cultural Outreach Cafe Talk centered around one of the most deeply rooted practices in Vietnamese culture: ancestor worship (Thờ cúng tổ tiên).
Rather than approaching it as a religion, the session explored ancestor worship as a living cultural tradition - one that reflects Filial Piety (Lòng Hiếu Thảo) and the belief that family bonds continue beyond physical life. Through stories, discussion, and shared reflections, participants discovered how the Vietnamese relationship with ancestors shapes everyday life, values, and identity.
During the talk, we explored:
🕯️ The ancestral altar (bàn thờ) as a sacred space connecting the living and the departed
🕯️ The ritual of lighting incense and its role as a “bridge” between two worlds
🕯️ Food offerings, thụ lộc, and the meaning of sharing blessings as a family
🕯️ Death anniversaries (ngày giỗ) and why remembrance often matters more than birthdays
🕯️ Beliefs surrounding joss paper, wandering souls, and community compassion
What made the session especially meaningful was how participants connected these traditions to their own experiences. Familiar practices - lighting incense, preparing offerings, gathering on ngày giỗ - were seen through new perspectives, turning everyday rituals into powerful cultural stories.
Beyond cultural knowledge, the English club of English Explorer also created space to:
🌏 Exchange beliefs and cultural viewpoints
🗣️ Practice English through thoughtful, real-life discussions
🤝 Connect through shared values of family, memory, and respect
This Cultural Outreach Cafe Talk reminded us that ancestor worship is not about the past alone - it is about continuity, gratitude, and understanding who we are through those who came before us. At English Explorer, we believe language learning becomes richer when it opens doors to culture, stories, and human connection - and this afternoon truly embodied that belief.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared your thoughts, stories, and curiosity. We look forward to continuing these cultural conversations together in our next Cafe Talk.
See you at the next English Explorer gathering on Sunday, January 8th, 2026 from 3:30pm to 5pm 🤍
