How Houseplants Can Make You Happy
💎 In the modern world, most of us spend most of our time indoors. But being completely separated from nature might not be good for our well-being.
Some scientists think humans may actually have an emotional need to feel connected with nature and other living things. And one way to feel connected is to bring a little bit of the natural world inside by adding some houseplants to our homes or offices.
Caring for plants that grow and change with the seasons will also give us something to look forward to and add a little excitement to our lives.
But indoor 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 does a lot more than just look pretty. Research has shown that looking after houseplants can help reduce people's stress, and lower their heart rate and blood pressure.
Looking after houseplants has also been associated with improved focus, better academic achievement and more creativity. One study found that workers were more productive when working in a space with houseplants. And another study even found that having houseplants in hospitals could help patients recovering from surgery.
There is a common idea that houseplants can clean the air in a building. However, research suggests that you would need to have a really large number of plants to make this possible. For most people, trying to clean indoor air with houseplants isn't really practical — so just opening your windows or running an air 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿 may have more effect!
However, you don't need a huge number of houseplants to feel the other benefits they bring.
So which plants should you choose?
Research from the UK suggests that plants with lots of healthy green leaves bring more well-being. Rounded leaves also seem to have a more calming effect than cactus 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 or plants with narrow leaves.
Some people also like to have palm plants — because they remind them of their holidays!

Google Allows Users to Change Gmail Names
💎 The year is 2004. You're studying at university, and you've been invited to use this new thing called "Gmail." You decide to make your own email address, and you think of a great username: [email protected]
The year is 2026. You're applying for a job and they ask for your email address. You've used the same email address for years, and you're a little 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱.
Many people have email addresses they wish they could change. But creating a new email address could mean losing years of emails and contacts.
But now, Google is giving people in the US the chance to change that.
"Many users have old email addresses that no longer 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 who they are," Google said in a blog post.
These users might want to change their email addresses for professional reasons, or because it's "simply a username that they have 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻," the company added.
Now, these users can just go into their account settings and change their name to any other available name. They will still have access to their account, inbox and data under the new username.
This change is only available to people in the US, and Google hasn't said whether it will be available in other countries in the future.
"2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn't need to be stuck in it," Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote on X.
Users will be able to log into their accounts with both their old and new usernames. So if you really want, you can still be coolcat1234 — but now your boss doesn't need to know that!

How to Help Remote Workers Feel Connected
💎 The coronavirus pandemic led to a lot of people working from home. And while many have now gone back to the office, some still do remote work.
There are a lot of good things about remote work. But being out of the office can also lead to bosses and workers feeling 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱.
So what can companies do to make remote workers feel more connected?
Dustin Johnson is a boss at a US software company Seeq. He told Forbes that companies need to give new remote workers a mentor from the day they start work. This can help make the new worker feel more connected.
Communication is important too. Some bosses like to have short meetings with their remote workers at the start of every day. Others say it's better to have fewer meetings and trust people to do their jobs.
The learning company Moodle says meetings are important, but they don't need to be about work. Remote workers can meet online to talk about other things, like books or food.
Things like this can help boost staff 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗲 and make people feel that they're working in a team, even if they're situated far away from each other.
It's also a good idea to make time to 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 workers, Moodle says. This is something that can be forgotten when workers are not together in an office.
And there's one more thing bosses can do to help workers feel more connected: ask them to come back to the office! But that might not be a very popular idea!
