🇻🇳 BEAUTIFUL VIETNAMESE WORDS THAT EXPRESS EMOTIONS
Some emotions are difficult to put into words. But in Vietnamese, sometimes just two syllables are enough to capture an entire inner world filled with tenderness, confusion, and deeply hidden feelings.
1. Thương (Love with tenderness and care)
“Thương” is a very special word in Vietnamese. In just one syllable, it can express love, care, compassion, tenderness, and even longing. You may “thương” someone because you love them, because you miss them, because they have been through hardship, or simply because thinking of them makes your heart soften. “Thương” is often deeper than a fleeting attraction and warmer than the word “love” spoken aloud.
💬 “Mẹ thương con lắm.”
= I love you so much, my child.
💬 “Nhìn cụ già một mình thấy rất thương.”
= Seeing the elderly person all alone made me feel deeply sorry for them.
2. Xao xuyến (Lightly moved emotionally)
“Xao xuyến” describes the feeling of your heart gently stirring because of a person, a moment, or a memory. It may come from happiness, emotion, or a sudden sense of longing—soft and subtle, yet lingering in your heart for a long time.
💬 “Giọng hát của cô ấy làm người nghe xao xuyến.”
= Her singing lightly moved the listeners emotionally.
3. Bâng khuâng (Wistful)
“Bâng khuâng” describes a moment when your heart suddenly feels wistful or unsettled, even though you cannot clearly explain why. It is not as painful as sorrow, nor as light as happiness. Instead, it lies somewhere between loss and hope.
Both syllables are pronounced with level tones, creating a sound that seems to stretch on without a clear ending—like a soft, lingering sigh filled with unspoken thoughts.
💬 “Nhớ lại ngày còn đi học, tôi thấy lòng bâng khuâng.”
= Thinking back to my school days, I suddenly felt a wave of wistfulness.
4. Bẽ bàng (embarrassed and disappointed)
“Bẽ bàng” is more than simply feeling sad because something did not work out. It is a mixture of disappointment, embarrassment, and vulnerability, especially when your pain seems to be exposed in front of others. “Bẽ” suggests losing face or feeling ashamed, while “bàng” evokes a sense of shock or bewilderment. Together, the word describes the feeling of standing among a crowd yet feeling isolated, exposed, and unsure of how to face the situation.
💬 “Cô bẽ bàng nhận ra những cố gắng của mình không được công nhận.”
= She felt embarassed and disappointed when she realized that her efforts had gone unrecognized.
The beauty of Vietnamese lies not only in its sounds, but also in its ability to name the most delicate and fleeting emotions. 🇻🇳
