👟😂 When the Shoes Come Off, You Know He’s Comfortable!

Well… I think we can officially say he made himself at home today. 😂

We played. We explored. He moved from toy to toy, investigated everything that caught his attention, and somewhere along the way…

the shoes came off. 👟🤣

And I loved it.

Because in Early Intervention, I get so much more from a child who feels safe, relaxed, and comfortable than I ever could from a child who feels like he has to sit perfectly, perform, or constantly follow adult directions.

When children are comfortable, something changes.

🧠 They explore more freely.
🗣️ They communicate more naturally.
🧸 They show us what genuinely interests them.
🎯 They stay engaged longer.
💡 They problem-solve without waiting for an adult to rescue them.
❤️ And most importantly, we get to see more of what they can actually do.

That’s valuable information for me.

I don’t need a toddler sitting at a table looking like he’s ready for a staff meeting. 😂

I need the real child.

The child who moves around.

The child who chooses a toy.

The child who changes his mind.

The child who experiments.

And apparently, the child who decides, “We’ve been together long enough. These Crocs can go.” 😂👟

For parents and caregivers, here’s the teachable moment:

🌱 Comfort isn’t the opposite of learning. Very often, comfort is what allows learning to happen.

Create an environment where children feel safe enough to explore. Follow their interests. Talk about what they’re doing. Introduce new experiences without controlling every interaction.

Then watch.

You may be surprised by how much they show you when they don’t feel like they’re being tested.

Today, I got curiosity, exploration, engagement…

and one abandoned pair of Crocs. 😂💚

I’ll take it.

🐷🐴🌾 He Walked Straight Past Me and Went to Work!

No hello to the toys on the shelf. No waiting for me to show him what to do.

He walked in, spotted the farm, walked straight past me, and went to work. 😂💚

And this is exactly why I love introducing new toys into Early Intervention sessions.

The first time a child encounters a new toy, we don’t always need to immediately explain it, demonstrate everything, or direct the play.

Sometimes we need to simply introduce the toy, give the child space, and watch the magic happen. ✨

🐮 He moved the animals around the farm.

🚪 He opened and closed the doors.

🐷 He explored where the animals could go.

🔔 He investigated the different parts of the farm.

👀 And most importantly, he explored the entire toy on his own.

While he was “just playing,” I was watching something much bigger.

🧠 Problem solving: What does this do? Where does this go?

🤲 Fine motor development: Manipulating the animals, doors, buttons, and moving parts.

👀 Visual exploration: Scanning the farm and noticing different features.

🎯 Attention and persistence: Staying with an activity long enough to discover how different parts work.

🐴 Pretend play: Moving animals through their environment and beginning to create meaning through play.

💬 Language opportunities: Every discovery gives us something to talk about: cow, pig, horse, open, close, in, out, up, down, more, go.

And here’s the teachable moment for parents and caregivers:

🌱 Don’t be too quick to show a child the “right” way to play with a new toy.

Put it within reach. Let them investigate it.

Watch what catches their attention. See what they try first. Give them time to figure things out before stepping in.

Then join their play.

If he moves the cow, I can say, “The cow is walking.”

If he opens the door, “You opened the door!”

If he puts an animal inside, “The pig is IN the barn.”

Now I’m building language around something he already chose to do.

That’s powerful because I’m following his interest instead of interrupting it.

Sometimes our job isn’t to create the learning moment.

It’s to recognize the learning that’s already happening and build on it. 💚

Today, I introduced the farm.

He took care of the rest. 🐮🐷🐴🌾✨

📚 A PRESCHOOL I AM PROUD TO RECOMMEND

I do not recommend early childhood programs lightly. The preschool years are too important. Children need more than supervision, worksheets, and random activities. They need an environment led by someone who understands how young children grow, learn, and develop.

That is why I am pleased to recommend Curious Learners Preschool, founded by my friend and fellow early childhood professional.

🔨🧠 It Looks Like Hammering… But Look at Everything His Brain Is Doing!

This little guy is busy using a hammer to pound colorful shapes, and while he may simply think he’s having fun, there is a LOT of learning happening in this moment. ❤️

🤲 Fine Motor Development
Grasping the hammer and controlling it strengthens his hands, wrists, and arms. These are foundational skills for future tasks such as drawing, writing, feeding, and dressing.

👀 Hand-Eye Coordination
He has to look at the shape, position the hammer, aim, and make contact. His eyes and hands are learning to work together.

🎯 Motor Planning
There is an entire sequence happening in his brain:

See the target ➡️ Lift the hammer ➡️ Aim ➡️ Hit!

Each repetition gives his brain another opportunity to organize and execute that movement.

🧠 Cause & Effect
“When I hit this, something happens!”

That discovery encourages him to experiment, repeat actions, and begin understanding how his actions affect the world around him.

🌈 Colors & Shapes
Those brightly colored pieces create natural opportunities to introduce and reinforce colors and shapes while he plays.

👂 Listening & Following Directions
Now we can add language:

🗣️ “Hit the yellow one.”
🗣️ “Find the circle.”
🗣️ “Hit it again.”
🗣️ “Give me the hammer.”

Suddenly, a fine motor activity is also strengthening receptive language and comprehension.

💬 Building Vocabulary
Simple words such as hammer, hit, down, more, again, along with color and shape words, can be modeled naturally while he remains engaged in play.

💪 Attention & Persistence
And what happens when the hammer misses?

Try again!

That simple moment gives him practice with attention, persistence, adjusting his movements, and working toward a goal.

🌱 This is why purposeful play is so powerful.

We don’t have to separate language development, cognitive development, motor development, and attention into completely different activities.

With the right toy, intentional interaction, and an engaged child, all of those developmental skills can be growing at the same time.

And to him?

He’s just having fun with a hammer. 🔨😊

🚨 PARENTS, PLEASE STOP WAITING UNTIL THE REPORT CARD.

By the time the report card confirms that your child is struggling, your child has often been struggling for weeks.

The signs usually show up much earlier.

📚 Reading takes longer than it should.

✏️ Writing assignments suddenly become a battle.

➗ Math homework that once took 20 minutes now takes an hour.

😩 “I don’t know” becomes the answer to everything.

📄 Papers start disappearing into backpacks.

🤐 And the child who used to tell you everything about school suddenly doesn’t want to talk about it.

Those aren’t always behavior problems.

Sometimes, they are academic warning signs.

And this is where parents have to be careful.

A child can sit quietly in class, complete assignments, earn passing grades, and still have serious gaps in foundational skills.

Passing is not the same as mastering.

That distinction matters because learning builds.

A weak reader eventually struggles with science and social studies because there is more to read.

A child who never mastered number sense eventually struggles when the math becomes more abstract.

A child who cannot organize a complete sentence eventually meets paragraphs, essays, and written responses.

The work gets harder.

The gap gets wider.

And eventually the child starts believing:

💭 “I’m just not good at this.”

That is the part we cannot afford to ignore.

Because sometimes what looks like laziness is frustration.

Sometimes what looks like a lack of confidence is a child who has figured out that everyone else seems to understand something they don’t.

Sometimes the attitude is protecting the embarrassment.

🎯 Early academic support matters.

You don’t have to panic because your child struggles with something.

But you do have to pay attention.

Ask questions.

Look at the work coming home.

Listen to the teacher.

Watch how independently your child can complete age-appropriate work.

And when you see a gap, address it while it is still a gap.

Don’t wait until it becomes a wall.

Children do not need us to pretend everything is fine.

They need us to notice.

They need us to respond.

And sometimes, the most loving thing a parent can say is:

❤️ “I see where you’re struggling. We’re going to work on it.”

That is how confidence is rebuilt.

That is how foundations become stronger.

And that is how we change the learning experience.

In 2011, Advanced Tutorials began with a simple purpose: help children become stronger, more confident learners.

Today, 15 years later, that purpose remains at the heart of everything we do. 💚

A lot has changed over the years.

Our programs have grown.
Our methods have evolved.
Our systems have become stronger.
And countless children and families have walked through our doors.

But one thing has never changed:

🔄 Once Again, We’re Back as If We Never Left!

One of the best things to see at the beginning of a new school year is a student returning and simply picking up where we left off.

No starting over. No rebuilding routines from scratch. The expectations are familiar, the strategies are familiar, and the student already knows how to approach the work.

That is the power of consistency. 🌱

Academic growth rarely happens because of one great lesson or one productive week. It happens when students receive intentional instruction, practice skills repeatedly, receive feedback, and continue building on what they have already learned.

📚 Consistency builds mastery. Skills that are practiced regularly become stronger and more automatic.

🧠 Consistency strengthens retention. Students are more likely to remember and apply previously learned strategies when those skills are continually reinforced.

💪 Consistency builds confidence. When children recognize the work and know how to approach it, hesitation begins to disappear.

📈 Consistency improves long-term outcomes. Instead of constantly filling the same gaps, we can move forward and build increasingly complex skills on a stronger foundation.

This is also why Advanced Tutorials does not complete homework. Our goal isn’t to get a child through tonight’s assignment. Our goal is to strengthen the underlying reading, writing, and math skills that the child will need for tomorrow’s assignment, next month’s assessment, and the years ahead.

Today, we picked up where we left off.

And that matters.

🐷🚜 A New Favorite Just Arrived… and We’re About to Have a Blast! 🌾🐮

At first glance, this looks like a fun farm toy.

As an Early Intervention Specialist, I see dozens of learning opportunities packed into one toy!

Here’s why I’m excited to add the Fisher-Price Little People Caring for Animals Farm to our therapy room.

🗣️ Language Development
Every animal becomes an opportunity to build vocabulary.

🐷 Pig
🐮 Cow
🐔 Chicken
🐴 Horse
👨‍🌾 Farmer

We’ll practice naming animals, imitating sounds, answering questions, and building simple phrases like:
“Cow in.”
“Open door.”
“Pig out.”

🧠 Cognitive Development
Children will learn:
🔢 Counting
🎨 Colors
🐄 Animal identification
📏 Opposites (open/closed, in/out, up/down)
➡️ Cause and effect by pressing buttons, opening doors, and activating sounds.

🤲 Fine Motor Skills

All of these strengthen the small muscles needed for writing, dressing, and feeding independently.

This little one wasn’t just raising his hands.

He was listening, understanding, and responding to verbal directions.

What looks like a simple game is actually helping develop several important skills.

🧠 Receptive Language
When a child hears “up” and “down” and performs the correct action, they’re demonstrating an understanding of language. This is a major milestone in communication development.

👂 Listening Skills
Following one-step directions requires attention, processing, and the ability to connect words with actions.

🤲 Motor Planning
The brain sends a message to the body, then the body carries out the movement. This strengthens the connection between thinking and doing.

🎯 Joint Attention
Learning happens through shared interactions. The child listens to an adult, responds, and enjoys the success of getting it right.

😊 Learning Through Play
