Save the Date: Tuesday, March 26, 2024 for CPAN Virtual Symposium

As 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the Caribbean Pan African Network (CPAN), the organization continues its commitment to annual programming and calls to action in support of national, regional, and international affairs. In keeping with its mission to foster Caribbean Unity, CPAN will host a symposium to examine the decolonization movement in the Caribbean.
This symposium is organized in respectful observance of the United Nations International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, annually commemorated on March 25th.

The symposium will feature three panel discussions with representatives from non-independent territories in the Caribbean, followed by interactive engagement with all participants. Confirmed presenters hail from: Curacao; Puerto Rico; St.
Martin; Virgin Islands (UK); and Virgin Islands (US). Invited presenters hail from Bonaire and Guadeloupe.

The Symposium aims to:
1) Enhance public understanding of the challenges affecting non-independent Caribbean territories,
commonwealths, protectorates, and similar entities.
2) Garner support for the decolonization process.
3) Foster improved engagement among Caribbean non-independent territories.
4) Understand decolonization within the context of Reparations.
The Symposium will comprise three panel discussions linked to the following themes:
• Informing the region about the ongoing decolonization processes.
• Unifying the Caribbean Decolonization Movement.
• Clarifying the link between Decolonization and the Reparations Movement.

Each panel discussion will be followed by interactive engagement with participants.

"Numerically small but culturally significant, Moko Jumbies—the Caribbean’s unique kind of stilt walkers—have a long lineage in Carnival. These magical, towering figures, regarded as ancestral spirits, are a direct manifestation of the African cultural heritage which crossed the Atlantic during the era of slavery. It is a tradition with roots that perhaps go further back than any other cultural form in modern-day Carnival. The oldest written reference is an account by William Young in 1791, which first described the “moco jumbos” in St. Vincent. The retention of this tradition in the region for over 200 years, and its ongoing contemporary evolution, make the Moko Jumbie one of the Caribbean’s most precious cultural treasures."

As our NEW FIRE Family grows, we aim to develop meaningful relationships with members of the physical community in which our festival is held.

In 2018, our team collaborated with Wasa's Adopt a River, SWMCOL and EMA's ICare TT for a clean up of the Acono River which neighbours Ortinola Estate.

This year, as we return to the village of Acono in Maracas Valley for NFF2019, we continue to create opportunities for environmental, economic and social benefits to the community.
