We’re PAW-sitively Thrilled to Welcome Heather McRae to GHCDS!

Please join us in giving a warm Panther welcome to Heather McRae, who brings to GHCDS a wonderful combination of experience working with children and a lifelong passion for the performing arts!

Heather is an experienced theater educator, director, and performer who has spent many years helping young people discover the confidence and creativity that come from stepping onto a stage. Since 2022, she has served as an instructor and show director with The Calico Cat Company and brings more than 15 years of community theater experience as an actor, stage manager, director, and behind-the-scenes theater artist.

Her work with young performers extends beyond the stage. Heather has facilitated summer theater workshops for young students and led numerous youth drama clubs, using the arts as a way to help children find their voices, take risks, work together, and discover what they are capable of.

At the heart of Heather’s work is a simple but important philosophy: lead with empathy, care, and kindness. She is passionate about creating safe and encouraging spaces where every child feels seen, supported, and confident enough to try something new.

For Heather, few things are more rewarding than watching a young person discover their creativity, build confidence, and find the courage to step outside their comfort zone—and we know that spirit will be a wonderful addition to our GHCDS community.

Welcome to the Panther family, Heather! We’re PAW-sitively thrilled you’re here and can’t wait to see the creativity you inspire in our students!

We’re PAW-sitively Thrilled to Welcome Katie Gavlick to GHCDS!

Please join us in welcoming Katie Gavlick to the GHCDS family as she begins her first year with us!

Originally from Clearwater, Florida, Katie earned both her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Master’s degree in Autism from Florida State University. While in college, she volunteered with WorldTeach, spending six months in rural Namibia teaching English and computer skills—an experience she says transformed her personally and reignited her passion for teaching.

That passion eventually brought her to the Virgin Islands, where she taught Mindfulness and Physical Education to students in grades K–12 at Gifft Hill School on St. John. Her background in special education, mindfulness, movement, and working with students across a wide range of ages brings a wonderful perspective to our community.

And Katie’s adventures certainly don’t stop when the school day ends! For two years, she and her fiancé lived aboard and sailed much of the Caribbean on their home-built 30-foot catamaran. When she’s on land, you can also find her sharing another passion—teaching yoga at Island Movement.

From Florida to Namibia, St. John to the Caribbean Sea, Katie’s journey has been filled with learning, adventure, movement, and a commitment to helping others grow. Now, she’s excited to begin her next chapter right here at GHCDS—and we’re so happy that journey has brought her to us!

Welcome to GHCDS, Katie! We’re PAW-sitively thrilled to have you as part of the Panther family! 🐾

We’re PAW-sitively Thrilled to Welcome Mackie Taylor to GHCDS!

For Mackie Taylor, joining GHCDS is also a bit of a homecoming!

Born and raised on St. Croix, Mackie is a proud graduate of The Good Hope School who went on to earn his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology. Now, he returns to campus bringing with him a unique combination of technical expertise, athletic experience, and a strong connection to our island and school community.

Soccer has been a lifelong passion for Mackie. He competed from elementary school through college and had the honor of representing the U.S. Virgin Islands on both the Youth and Men’s National Teams. For the past decade, he has continued to share his love of the game as a licensed soccer coach, helping young athletes develop their skills, confidence, and love of the sport.

Beyond the soccer field, Mackie has a passion for technology, the outdoors, continuous learning, and personal growth. Most importantly, he values his role as a parent and the opportunity to help young people learn and grow.

There is always something especially meaningful about welcoming a former student back to GHCDS—this time ready to give back to the next generation.

Welcome home, Mackie! We’re PAW-sitively thrilled to have you back as part of the GHCDS family!

FIRST DAY. LAST FIRST DAY. CLASS OF 2027!

And just like that, the GHCDS Class of 2027 has completed their last first day of high school!

For years, they’ve watched the classes ahead of them reach this milestone—and now, it’s finally their turn.

Today marked the beginning of a year filled with lasts: last first day, last Prom, last Spirit Week, last season, last performance, last exams…and eventually, that unforgettable last walk across campus before they walk across the graduation stage.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, there is an entire senior year waiting to be lived!

A year to lead, laugh, learn, celebrate, make memories, leave their mark, and enjoy every moment together.

Class of 2027, your senior year is officially underway. Make it count. Make it memorable. And most importantly—make it yours!

Happy Last First Day, Seniors! Here’s to the Class of 2027!

AND WE’RE OFF!

The first day of school is officially underway, and GHCDS is alive with Panther energy!

Across campus, students are settling into new routines, getting to know their teachers, reconnecting with classmates, and jumping into the first lessons, activities, and conversations of the year.

There are names to learn, schedules to figure out, classrooms to explore, goals to set—and so many memories waiting to be made.

But perhaps the best part of today is simply seeing our campus full again. Full of laughter. Full of questions. Full of friendships. Full of curiosity. And full of the incredible energy our students bring with them each day.

This is what we’ve been waiting for all summer.

The Panthers are back, and 2026–27 has officially begun!

Here’s to a year of learning boldly, trying new things, supporting one another, and making every day count.

A NEW YEAR. A FRESH START. A CAMPUS FULL OF POSSIBILITIES.

Today, our Panthers walked the main crosswalk of GHCDS ready to begin another year together.

Some arrived knowing exactly where to go. Others were finding a classroom for the very first time. There were old friends reunited, new friendships beginning, teachers learning new names, and students discovering what this year might have in store.

That’s the magic of the first day: everyone gets a new beginning.

Over the months ahead, these classrooms, fields, stages, labs, playgrounds, and gathering spaces will become the backdrop for countless moments of learning, discovery, challenge, laughter, friendship, and growth.

Today is only the beginning—and we can’t wait to see where this year takes our Panthers.

Welcome Home. Welcome Back. Welcome Forward.

Here’s to 2026–27!

From the ELC to the Upper School, it feels GREAT to have our Panthers home.

We’re PAW-sitively Thrilled to Welcome Jenn Carter to GHCDS!

Please join us in welcoming Ms. Jenn Carter, our new Upper School Science Teacher, to the Panther family—and, as it turns out, being a Panther is nothing new for her!

Originally from Los Angeles, Ms. Carter attended a K–12 school in Inglewood where the mascot was—you guessed it—the Panthers! She later moved to the small town of Jay, Oklahoma, where she became involved in FFA, showing pigs and competing in 4-H forestry.

Her love of science, animals, agriculture, and the environment has shaped an impressive academic and professional journey. Ms. Carter holds a B.S. in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Studies and a Master of Agriculture in International Agriculture from Oklahoma State University, as well as an M.S. in Environmental Management and Policy, with a focus on sustainability and renewable energy, from the University of Denver. She also holds a Permaculture Design Certification from Oregon State University.

Before coming to St. Croix, Ms. Carter spent seven years teaching middle school math and science in Houston, Texas. Since 2020, she has put her science background to work beyond the classroom in roles ranging from environmental technology and sustainability data analysis to environmental safety here in the Virgin Islands.

And how did she end up on St. Croix? When COVID pushed her out of the classroom in 2020, her best friend—now her husband!—encouraged her to come to St. Croix and helped her find work that put her degrees to use. The job worked out…and so did the relationship!

Now, we’re especially excited that her journey has brought her back to the classroom—and back to being a Panther!

When she isn’t teaching, Ms. Carter enjoys life with her husband and their two dogs, who she happily considers her four-legged children.

We can’t wait for our Upper School students to benefit from Ms. Carter’s real-world experience, curiosity, and passion for science and sustainability.

Welcome to GHCDS, Ms. Carter! Once a Panther, always a Panther!

We’re PAW-sitively Thrilled to Welcome Robert Engel to GHCDS!

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Robert Engel, our new Upper School Physical Education Teacher, to the Panther family!

Mr. Engel brings an incredible range of experience to GHCDS, with 24 years in education as both a middle and high school teacher and an administrator at the high school and university levels—including experience at international boarding schools.

Before his career in education, Mr. Engel was a professional basketball player, competing in the NBA Summer League and professionally in Europe. He later brought that experience to the sidelines as a coach for high school, amateur, and professional teams, earning five championship titles along the way.

A dual citizen of the United States and Italy, Mr. Engel is fluent in Italian and conversational in German. His international experience also extends beyond education and athletics—he has worked as a leadership and business coach with clients around the world.

When he’s not teaching or coaching, you might find him reading and writing, exploring philosophy, behind a camera, traveling, or continuing his quest to discover great beaches around the world.
