The Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center (VICCC) is nestled within the the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). VICCC produces, organizes and develops programs, conferences, workshops, educational research, cultural heritage resources, collaborative exchanges and more in support of Virgin Islands Caribbean cultural institutions, tra

VICCC serves as an asset to the mission, intellectual academy and community engagement of the University of the Virgin Islands- the only Historically Black College and University in the Caribbean and a Land Grant Institution (LGI). On September 28, 2012, an inaugural VICCC Symposium was hosted on the UVI Albert Sheen Campus on St. Croix with the educational and intellectual theme of “VI and Caribbean Cultural Issues” with remarks and primary presentations shared by the UVI Administration and CLASS faculty. At this symposium, the UVI Administration shared voices of encouragement, support and ideological clarity on the long-term value and purpose of the VICCC. UVI President Dr. David Hall shared remarks on “the importance of a concept ...with a committee committed to the VICCC” that required action and implementation" which he culminated in the following statement: “The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is deeply and authentically committed to ensuring that the unique cultures and heritages of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean are researched, compiled, cultivated and disseminated broadly. This should always be a core responsibility of a University situated within a social and cultural context as UVI.”
With endorsement and support of the UVI Administration and Board of Trustees, on November 9, 2012 VICCC was inaugurated as an official UVI center. During the 15th Annual Islands In Between Conference hosted on the UVI St. Thomas Campus and collaboratively organized by the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras; the University of the West Indies-Cave Hill, Barbados; the University of the Virgin Islands; and Per Ankh Institute, the VICCC was officially launched!!! At this official UVI event, UVI President Dr. David Hall ceremoniously approved the opening of the VICCC. At the same opening ceremony, former UVI CLASS Dean, Dr. Simon Jones-Hendrickson, announced the official appointment of Dr. Chenzira Davis Kahina as the VICCC Director. VICCC is designed to be complementary to and integrated with the academic pursuits, mission and vision within UVI's Strategic Plan 2017 "Pathways to Greatness" and beyond. "In harmony with the mission of the University of the Virgin Islands and its College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Virgin Islands Caribbean Cultural Center collaboratively serves as a liaison designated to create a reservoir of resources and initiatives for faculty, students, administration, staff and the community to maintain and sustain access to materials that nurture, preserve, research, document, restore, promote, protect and respect Virgin Islands and Caribbean culture."
