Just next to Henry Rolhsons Airport at St. Croix you'll notice what seems to be a red mountain. In fact it is highly polluted waste from aluminium production that began in 1962.

Underneath these piles of dirt lies an old Danish sugar plantation that has the same name as the famous one at St. John: Annaberg.

From left to the rigtht: the red dirt, extracts from Google Earth and extracts from Oxholms map af St. Croix 1794.

The aluminium plant began operations in 1962 and ceased all activities in 2000 after a decade of several diffent owners. When the plant was at it's highest (1962-1988) it was Harvey Aluminium later controlled by Martin Marietta Aluminia that later on became Lockheed Martin.
The red waste has it's clour from high concentration of iron oxide. It can be radioactive and maintains a high pH balance. Dust blowing from the waste is blamed to cause ilnesses amoung residents and to pollute its surrounding mangrooves and the sea (including the corals).

V.I. Legislature approved using the 1400 acre for this purpose in 1962.

It is!
