reporter Nick Bowlin wrote an amazing piece about my solar energy training program and my students at Delta High. Pictured here is a beloved and sorely missed student who tragically passed away this fall. His story tells the story and more about the struggles of teaching authentic vocational skills and the human stories that follow. The engineering design process helps us break down complex projects for students and collect data to inform our final product. The teachers from the US Virgin Islands are learning about and the so they can create project based units to help their students and communities become more resilient in the face of climate disasters.

A ? Tell ‘em we’re ready here in Delta, CO. My students designed, built and are now installing solar panels on this outdoor classroom.

Students apply their data collection and optimization experiments to design a solar powered phone charger for a specific user.

I’m presenting conference in St. Louis on an engineering design project where students build and optimize solar chargers. If any teachers are at at the conference come join me! 2pm Friday America’s Center 221 I’ll also be presenting with .education at 11am

Solar Energy Training students worked on a 10kW install at Delta High with support from .energy.international and our electrical co-op DMEA. Way to go . They even featured us on the nightly news- check link in bio!

Ice core dissection. How old is this ice? What stories does it have to tell? Making the invisible- visible here in .

My sudents imitate Aldo Leopold as they welcome in fall this year.
Thanks Lindblad Expeditions and NatGeo for sponsoring the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship. Transforming my classroom here in Delta Colorado and helping me make visible the invisible places on this planet. http://ow.ly/KEgQ30lHphx

I collected water samples around the Canadian Arctic and Greenland this summer as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. My plan is to bring stories, images and videos of the process of science home to my students so they can understand how we monitor a changing climate. I’ll be crafting lessons and editing my footage soon! Stay tuned

This tiny white lump is a mature male polar bear who has lost his pack ice for the season. He will not eat again until October when the ice returns- if he survives. He’s not strong enough to roam the beaches looking for washed up marine mammals or to travel north and find ice. A victim of climate change? The natural world can be a brutal place and this old bear might be reaching the end of a long natural life. That is what is so striking about the Arctic- the effect of anthropogenic climate change are everywhere- but you can’t point to “one bear” or that one “retreating glacier” and say: “look- there’s climate change.” The reduction in sea ice and long term climate patterns all point to dismal outcomes for many bears and many glaciers. But that’s the tricky part about climate change... it’s not about finding anecdotal examples but rooted in long-term trends. And why continued research is so important. This bear may have been at the end of his natural life, but climate change sure isn’t helping
