University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana
Best known for the golden dome atop its Main Building (which was the inspiration for the football team's iconic helmets), the University of Notre Dame was first founded in 1842 between two lakes—St. Mary's Lake to the west, and St. Joseph's to the east. The Catholic university's most prized structures include a Virgin Mary statute blessing the Grotto (it was modeled after one at Lourdes) and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. At 218 feet high, the Gothic, stained-glass-filled chapel is the tallest university chapel in the U.S.

University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois
The University of Chicago is set in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighborhoods, seven miles south of Chicago's downtown Loop. The campus's design was inspired by the look of Oxford University. (One bold exception is Joe and Rika Mansueto Library, set underground and topped with an elliptical glass dome, which opened in 2011.) Many of the older structures—such as the 1902-built Hitchcock Hall dormitory—on the campus have earned designation on the National Register of Historic Places.

Thomas Jefferson founded UVA in 1819—he often claimed it was one of his proudest accomplishments, marking it higher on his tombstone than being president of the United States. Though the university has grown to encompass 1,682 acres, its Roman-inflected Rotunda, built in 1826, is still the symbolic heart of the campus: The Palladian-style building was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the university and Jefferson's home at Monticello.
