Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and one of the largest cities in the world. It is a busy and beautiful city with a rich history and culture.

Mexico City was built near the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, which was founded by the Aztecs more than 700 years ago. Today, you can see both ancient history and modern life throughout the city.

One of the most famous places to visit is the Zócalo, the large main square in the heart of the city. You can also visit museums, beautiful parks, historic buildings, and colorful neighborhoods.

Mexican food is an important part of the culture. In Mexico City, people enjoy delicious foods such as tacos, tamales, quesadillas, and churros. 🌮

Mexico City is a place full of history, traditions, music, art, and amazing food. It is a wonderful city that shows the heart and diversity of Mexico. ❤️🇲🇽

🇻🇪 Discovering Venezuela

Venezuela is a caribbean, latin american country; located in northern South America, it's capital Caracas; it has a population of 30 million inhabitants; comprising 23 states as well as islands and archipelagos located in the Caribbean Sea. The currency is the Bolivar. It has the largest reserves of heavy oil in the world. Venezuela features distinct cultural diversity across its regions resulting from a blend of indigenous, african and spanish cultures- a mix later enriched by immigrants from Europe and other latino americans countries. In items of gastronomy typical dishes are the arepa, the pabellon criollo and the hallaca. It also boasts major natural tourist attractions such as Angel falls, the Los Roques archipielago, lake Maracaibo , the Sierra nevada etc.
Despite the current economic contraction, venezuelans remain generous, friendly, cheerpul entrepreneurial and hardworking- qualities that are a source of national pride.

In today’s interconnected world, learning a second language is more than just an academic skill—it is a powerful tool that opens doors to communication, understanding, and opportunity. When children begin learning a new language at an early age, the benefits go far beyond vocabulary and grammar. It becomes a transformative experience that shapes their minds and their view of the world.

Children have a natural ability to absorb languages. Their brains are highly flexible, allowing them to pick up pronunciation, rhythm, and structure more easily than adults. This early exposure not only helps them achieve greater fluency but also strengthens their cognitive development. Studies show that bilingual children often demonstrate better problem-solving skills, creativity, and memory.

Learning a second language encourages children to step outside their comfort zones. As they begin to understand and express themselves in new ways, their confidence grows. They become more effective communicators, not only in the new language but also in their native one.

One of the most effective ways for children to learn is through play. A strong language program incorporates interactive games and engaging songs that make learning fun and meaningful. Through music, children develop pronunciation and rhythm naturally, while games reinforce vocabulary and comprehension in an exciting way. This playful approach keeps children motivated and eager to learn more.

The Spring Equinox at Chichén Itzá: Connecting Culture, Nature, and the Spanish Language

Learning a language is about more than just memorizing vocabulary; it’s about discovering how different cultures see the world. A perfect example of this happens each year around March 20 or 21 at Chichén Itzá, one of the most famous archaeological sites of the ancient Maya civilization in Mexico.

During the spring equinox (el equinoccio de primavera), sunlight and shadow align perfectly along the steps of El Castillo Pyramid. As the sun sets, triangular shadows appear on the staircase, creating the breathtaking illusion of a giant snake slowly descending the pyramid.

This visual effect represents the feathered serpent deity, Kukulkán, an important figure in Maya culture associated with knowledge, nature, and the cycles of life. The event demonstrates the extraordinary understanding the ancient Maya had of astronomy, mathematics, and architecture.

Observing the alignment of the sun (el sol) and the changing seasons reminds us of the powerful connection between humans and the natural world. Encouraging children to learn about these natural cycles can inspire immense curiosity, creativity, and focus. Spending time outdoors and exploring nature helps children develop a sense of wonder and overall well-being.

This naturally connects with learning Spanish. Language is closely tied to history, traditions, and scientific achievements. By exploring events like the spring equinox from Spanish-speaking cultures, students gain a deeper appreciation for both the language and the diverse people who speak it. It fosters empathy, global awareness, and a true connection to the words they are learning.

Bring the Culture Home:
- Vocabulary Time: Practice saying la primavera (spring), el sol (the sun), and la serpiente (the snake) together.
- Shadow Play: Grab a flashlight and some blocks! Challenge your kids to build a small pyramid and see if they can create their own descending shadows, just like at Chichén Itzá.

Carnival is one of the most joyful and colorful celebrations in Spanish-speaking countries. It is usually celebrated in February or early March, just before the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar. The exact dates change every year because they depend on Easter. This year, Ash Wednesday is February 18th, and Carnival is celebrated the days before that date. During Carnival, the streets are filled with music, dancing, costumes, and parades that reflect each country’s culture and traditions.

Among the most famous celebrations is the Carnaval de Barranquilla in Colombia. It takes place during the four days before Ash Wednesday and is known for its traditional parades such as the Battle of the Flowers, lively dance groups, cumbia music, and colorful costumes. It is recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Another well-known celebration is the Carnaval de Cádiz in Spain, famous for its chirigotas, musical groups that perform humorous and satirical songs about current events. In the Canary Islands, Spain, the Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the largest in the world, featuring spectacular costumes, queen competitions, and impressive parades.

In Latin America, the Carnaval de Oruro in Bolivia stands out for its deep Indigenous and religious roots, including traditional dances such as the Diablada. In Mexico, the Carnaval de Veracruz is very popular for its parades, concerts, and festive atmosphere along the waterfront.

During Carnival, people celebrate with parades, decorated floats, live music, traditional dances, costume contests, and street parties. Many participants wear extravagant outfits, masks, and bright makeup. The music varies by country and can include salsa, cumbia, merengue, and other local rhythms.

For children, Carnival is especially exciting. There are costume contests for kids, school parades, arts and crafts workshops where they can make masks, games, clown shows, and musical performances designed for young audiences. In some cities, special children’s Carnival events are organized to provide safe spaces for families to celebrate together.

In conclusion, Carnival in Spanish-speaking countries is a celebration full of history, tradition, and joy. Although each country has its own customs, they all share a festive spirit, creativity, and strong community participation that make Carnival an unforgettable experience for people of all ages.

December: 2025 Year Reflection
As we close out 2025, I’ve been thinking about what really matters in language learning.

With instant AI translation everywhere, it’s easy to ask: why struggle with grammar, idioms, and pronunciation when technology can handle it instantly? Is there any true benefit at this point of learning another language?

After over 20 years as a childhood Spanish teacher, the answer is a resounding “YES!” because true connection happens beyond words. When we speak someone else’s language, even imperfectly, we show we care enough to enter their world. We share joy of an inside class joke, the warmth of being truly understood and heard, the small victories that turn classmates into friends.

At a time when we have more information than ever right at our fingertips, we have less human connection than ever before. Learning a language lets us feel the nuance, the humor, the history carried in every expression. These are things no algorithm can fully convey. It’s the difference between a perfect translation and a heartfelt conversation over a shared meal.

In the end, it’s an act of courage and care: “I value you enough to meet you in your language.”

It has been an honor to teach your children my language and culture for these many years, and ultimately my joy to share this human connection with them.

Thank you for another year of growth, laughter, and beautiful human moments. Here’s to deeper connections in 2026!

Celebrating “Día de los Mu***os” in Spanish Class
November is a special month in our Spanish program. This month, our students explored one of the most colorful and meaningful traditions in Latin American culture — Día de los Mu***os, or the Day of the Dead.

Celebrated mainly in Mexico and in other Latin American countries, Día de los Mu***os is a joyful time to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Rather than being a sad occasion, it’s a celebration of life — filled with bright colors, music, flowers, and delicious traditional foods such as pan de mu**to and calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls). Families often build beautiful altars decorated with photos, candles, and marigold flowers (cempasúchil), believing that the spirits of their loved ones return to visit during this time.

In our classroom, students learned about the meaning behind these traditions and enjoyed participating in creative activities to connect with the culture. They decorated colorful skulls, listened to traditional music, and learned new Spanish vocabulary related to the celebration. We also talked about how remembrance and family are important values shared across cultures, even if the traditions look different around the world.

Through activities like this, our students not only practice the Spanish language but also develop cultural understanding and empathy — two key goals of our Spanish program.
