The 2nd annual Zapata County Youth Ag Day was held today the Zapata County Fair Show Barn. 2nd and 5th grade students from all ZCISD campuses, as well as, 8th graders from Zapata Middle School attended this event.

Students heard presentations from Texas Parks and Wildlife Biologist, Austin Heutzman, on wildlife predators and prey; Texas Farm Bureau Field Rep, Raul Villarreal, on Texas Commodities; USDA NRCS Conservationists, Joey Cortez and Tommy Vela, on the importance of soil conservation; and Texas A&M Poultry Science students, Chris Rodriguez, Patricia Torres and Mallory Zumwalt, on poultry production.

Special thanks to our high school 4-H members that assisted with this program. Thank you also, ZCISD administration, teachers and staff for helping make this program a success.

Great turnout at the Rancher’s Field Day today!

Dr. Hines, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Range Specialist, gave a presentation on strategies for managing mesquite, huisache and prickly pear. She also led a field demonstration on proper use of protective equipment, maintenance and calibration of spray equipment and individual plant treatment techniques for mesquite.

Pepe Martinez, USDA NRCS Grazing Land Specialist, gave a presentation on range management during and after a drought.

Tommy Vela, USDA NRCS District Conservationist, gave a brief update on USDA programs.

Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Rene Ramirez for hosting this field day at their ranch, El Milagro. Thank you for sharing your story and the work you are doing with us.

Zapata County 4-H was well represented at the District 12 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Alice today.

Members include: Sofia Paredes, Sofia Garcia, Selma Elizondo, Marlen Lopez, Lenny Salinas, Roxana Rodriguez, Joaquin Munoz, Marly Salinas, and Kamila Cantu.

Results:
5th place overall - Sofia Paredes
1st place sheep and goats - Lenny Salinas
3rd place hogs - Sofia Paredes

5th place overall team - Kamila Cantu, Marly Salinas and Lenny Salinas

3rd place overall team - Sofia Paredes, Joaquin Munoz and Roxana Rodriguez.

Sofia, Joaquin and Roxana qualified for the State 4-H Round Up Livestock Judging Contest in June.
