September is Attendance Awareness Month, and the State of Ohio recently updated its attendance laws with a renewed focus on supporting families and intervening early whenever attendance concerns arise.

Ohio's attendance laws have shifted from focusing only on unexcused absences and truancy, to supporting early intervention for all students at risk of becoming chronically absent. School districts are now required to monitor the total amount of instructional time students miss. This includes full-day absences, late arrivals, and early dismissals.

Under Ohio law, a student is considered chronically absent after missing 10 percent of the required instructional time during the school year, regardless of the reason for the absence.

Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly perform better in critical areas such as reading proficiency, overall academic achievement, and high school graduation rates.

We're here to work with families so that every Tornado has an opportunity to be present and successful!
