Yuma School District One proudly celebrates Jonathan Bailey, an eighth-grade science teacher at Gila Vista Jr. High School, for being named a recipient of the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers by the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA).

Bailey is among a select group of educators nationwide, and one of only two Arizona teachers, recognized for their outstanding contributions to science education early in their careers. The award honors teachers who demonstrate exceptional promise, creativity, and commitment to engaging students in meaningful scientific learning.

“Mr. Bailey brings science to life in a way that sparks curiosity and builds confidence in every student he teaches,” stated Frank Núñez, Principal at Gila Vista Jr. High School. “His classroom is a place where students feel seen, challenged, and inspired to think deeply, ask questions, and believe in their ability to succeed. We are incredibly proud of the impact he is making at Gila Vista and beyond.”

Through hands-on instruction, innovative lesson design, and a strong focus on student engagement, Bailey has created a classroom environment where students are encouraged to explore, question, and think deeply about the world around them. His work supports not only academic achievement, but also fosters confidence and a lasting interest in science among his students.

Bailey will be formally recognized during the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Anaheim, California on April 17th, 2026, where educators from across the country will gather to celebrate excellence in science teaching. The award provides funds to attend the National Conference on Science, receive a mentorship, and continuing opportunities for meaningful activities supporting science instruction in the classroom.

Yuma School District One extends its congratulations to Jonathan Bailey on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for his continued commitment to student success and excellence in education.
