Nassau County's Annual Teacher Convocation is upon us. This event was started several years ago by our Superintendent, Dr. Burns. It presents the only opportunity for all of us to be together at one time. We are still a size that we can do that. Duval, Hillsborough, Dade, and many others can't have a convocation. The intent is to have a positive start to the year with some words of wisdom, inspiration, encouragement, and the like. The professional development that follows is a requirement. My advice to my brothers and sisters in education is to do your best to make this a positive experience and not dwell on any negativity. Enjoy the opportunity to be with your team, meet the other teams, be with comrades you don't normally get to see, and just make it an all-around positive experience. See you soon!

Toward the end of the month, NTA will be putting out a survey to members. It will be asking about school climate, pay, bargaining items, and many other working conditions. It will be for members in good standing only. If you are not a member but wish to have input on these and other issues please join right away. There is a QR code on this page that gets you signed up. If you have any issues joining, contact your site representative right away.

I hope your break was relaxing, recharging, and got you ready for the second half of the year. I had a conversation with Dr. Burns about her holiday message. She has assured me that all Principals know that jeans passes or needing permission to wear jeans is not "a thing". The same goes for "comfy shoes". As far as the other items, like additional time off, there is no guidance on how to make that happen. If there are any issues with this and you are an NTA member in good standing please contact your site representative right away. If you are not a member you are on your own.

Monday Millage Update! How are Nassau County School District teachers benefiting from the millage?

Revenue generated by the one mill has allowed teachers to receive supplements ranging from $2,000.00 to $10,000.00 based on years of experience. The supplement amounts were determined through union negotiations and a teacher vote of approval. Over the past three years, state funding has been targeted at increasing beginning teacher pay while veteran teachers' pay has remained stagnant. The one mill has allowed our veteran teachers to receive a well-deserved and overdue boost in pay.
