Hundreds of parents are left looking for new child care centers after some are closing due to new regulations signed by the governor earlier this year. In March, childcare center experts said 800 kids lost their spots at a childcare center due to closures.

Tell everyone who will listen.
People who have dedicated their entire lives to children are walking away because of the changes DHS and the current Oklahoma administration have made.

There are posts like this all over provider pages in Oklahoma right now. This assault on our industry has to stop! It is creating a mental health crisis among our providers. It’s creating a workforce issue for our families and communities. We have been contacted by even more providers closing their business this week and month.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the following information with everyone.

We are making the very difficult decision to close Ravenwood after this summer. While there are multiple factors influencing this decision (including the inability to fill vacant spots despite tuition decreases for private pay) an “emergency” rule change made by DHS and the current Oklahoma administration will be the reason we are unable to continue. So I want to take this opportunity to provide clarity and also speak out about what is happening in our state.

We have prided ourselves in providing a quality, independent education for EVERYONE, including families from all socioeconomic backgrounds. In fact most of our revenue comes from DHS subsidies. With the recent rule change our star rating will be reduced and reimbursements will be cut in half if we fail to register with an accreditation agency. For the same reason we do not accept the Oklahoma school choice tax credit, we will not be seeking accreditation. Many of the approved agencies are religious, expensive, and time consuming, not to mention we have met the very strict requirements set by DHS to maintain 5-star status since the day our doors opened. We spend a considerable amount of time compiling evidence to present to DHS and complying with regular inspections from multiple agencies already (including maintaing our state teaching licenses AND directors’ credentials). Requiring accreditation from yet another third party will just add to the demanding schedules of childcare workers and cause further financial stress in a declining economy. Furthermore, we are not interested in answering to anyone but the families we serve.

Local news stations are already reporting on closures directly related to the rule change (link below). Facilities FULL of dedicated, educated staff and working class families will lose funding they depend on. And ultimately quality childcare will be even more difficult to find as the rule change disproportionately affects those who have prioritized improvements.

We are deeply saddened to know that so many families will also be affected by this and we know that the fight for our children has only just begun. While we may be closing our doors we are not done here. There is so much potential and need for this model of education. Our children deserve better and we hope you’ll continue to follow along as we work out exactly what this business will look like moving forward.

Thank you for everything

***this post is getting a lot of traction from people asking how they can help. PLEASE share this information with everyone who will listen.

This post only scratches the surface. I suspect that OKDHS has not only mismanaged current funding but is also quietly preparing to lose federal funding. New contracts state that “OKDHS cannot guarantee the continued availability of funding for this contract. In the event funds to finance this contract become unavailable either in full or in part due to insufficient funding OKDHS may terminate this contract or reduce this contract consideration, upon written notice to the Provider.”

They’ve made this rule change under the guise that it will improve childcare when really the only facilities likely to stay open are those run by big corporations with no stakes in the outcomes, and those that employ under qualified staff for less pay.

I genuinely cannot believe the state of education right now. How can we expect to add working class jobs to our economy when working class people won’t be able to find the childcare that will allow them to work? How can we expect the next generation to move our country forward when we aren’t investing in their future?

Ravenwood is now accepting applications for the Fall! We operate on a rolling admission schedule so prospective families are encouraged to begin the application process as soon as possible.

💡Why we require applications:

At Ravenwood we pride ourselves on fostering an environment of excellence and camaraderie, and our application process is designed to ensure that prospective students and their families both understand and support our mission.

While our curriculum is designed to address the individual needs of each student, we want to identify applicants who will thrive in a high expectation/high support environment. We also find that prospective students with a strong foundation of independence and social skills demonstrate a particular aptitude for growth in our program.

Our program also requires a great amount of commitment. Our community members are heavily involved in day-to-day activities both in and out of school, including conferences, Cool Bean Club meetings, and continuation of education at home. We believe that our students directly benefit from this support structure and we are looking for families that desire to positively contribute.

Finally, we value the importance of inclusivity. We intentionally maintain a balance in backgrounds, perspectives, and talents when admitting applicants and expect that all community members maintain an atmosphere of respect, understanding, and empathy.
