Your toddler doesn’t “know better.”

Their brain literally isn’t there yet.

Toddlers don’t pause, reflect, and then choose their behavior.
The part of the brain responsible for impulse control, reasoning, and emotional regulation is still under construction.

They didn’t color on the walls to frustrate you.
They didn’t dump the snacks to annoy you.
They didn’t throw food to waste it.
They didn’t undo the toys you just cleaned to test your patience.

Impulse control isn’t something children are born with.
It doesn’t even start developing until around age three and even then, it’s shaky and inconsistent for years.

So when someone says, “They know better”…
No. They literally don’t.

When your child makes a mess, breaks something, or has a melt down, it's not defiance.
It’s called development.

They aren’t giving you a hard time.
They’re having a hard time
Learn the difference.
