Thomas Clinkenbeard Obituary (2006) - Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento Bee 07/20/2025

July 20, 2006 - My dear brother, Tommy, goes home to his heavenly Father. It was unexpected and it happened too early in his short life, it still hits hard thinking about it, but I do because I loved my brother and miss him on a daily basis.. I put this here in case any of you knew Tommy and wanted to share a word or thought on this site. "Remember Me and I will Always be Right Here"

There was a time when the world revolved around Ellis Lake, its waters reflecting the promise of another endless summer day. Back then, we measured our lives by simple coordinates: the jingle of A&W carhop trays, the red-striped wrapping paper from Ernie's Toyland, and that perfect booth at Hal's Grubsteak where the barbecue sauce made everything right.
The Twin Cities heartbeat pulsed strongest on Friday nights. We'd press quarters into the parking meters along D Street before ducking into Bradley's or Jay's, teenagers pretending we had somewhere important to be, fi*****ng fabrics we couldn't afford. The Candy Box beckoned from across the way – remember those peppermint chews? How we'd watch Mr. Green collecting candies from behind the glass as we pointed out our selections, each piece a small treasure.
Woolworth's lunch counter hummed with gossip and possibility. The world waited just beyond the soda fountain, but we were in no hurry to find it. Time moved differently then – measured in boat races at Ellis Lake, fireworks that seemed to bloom just for us, and endless circles around Cal Skate's wooden floor, the speakers pushing out promises we were too young to understand but felt in our bones anyway.
Summer days brought the sweet perfume of peach orchards, the dusty scent of prune dehydrating in the fall. We'd cruise from the A&W to Shakey's, windows down, radio up – Shan's Bandstand playing the soundtrack to our small-town dreams. The whispered words "meet you at the Sutter Cut" carried all the weight of adventure.
We knew every curve of the Buttes on the horizon – our own private mountain range standing sentinel over rice fields and dreams. When we spotted them after long journeys, we knew we were almost home. We'd gather at river bottoms and dredger ponds, making memories by firelight, convinced we were the first to discover such freedom.
Seasons marked themselves in rituals: Chinese parades downtown, the Big-Little Game's fierce loyalties, summer lunches in the park. We watched SR-71 Blackbirds from Beale tear across impossible skies, their sonic booms rattling windows and ambitions alike.
The Peach Tree Mall was our teenage refuge – before the '86 flood claimed so much. We'd wander from Ernie's to Brock's for double scoops, feeling both infinite and small against the wider world. The scent of Scott's Bakery's sugar cookies with cherry chips lingered on Saturday mornings, sweet promises of community that couldn't be broken.
How many first dates happened at the State Theater? How many promises were whispered at the drive-in, where the Sacramento Valley stars competed with the flickering screen? The Marysville Drive-In, where we hid friends in trunks and shared blankets against the evening chill.
We were Honkers and Indians, rivals bound by geography and shared belonging. We climbed Sears Hill because it was there. We fished Shanghai Bend and spun stories at the Shack over flat trays of fries that fed us all.
The Twin Cities taught us how to belong somewhere. Casa Carlos, Uncle Fudd's, The Levee House – more than restaurants, they were landmarks on our journey to becoming. Even now, decades removed, we can close our eyes and taste those flavors, hear those voices, feel the weight of summer heat against our skin.
We grew up in a place where chickens crossed at crosswalks and everyone knew which field had the best tomato fights. Where the smell of rice straw burning signaled autumn as surely as any calendar. Where Eat and Run's little feet-shaped donut bars were breakfast currency and Hot Dog Junction meant you'd made a home run that mattered.
The world has moved on. Shakey's Pizza is gone now. So is Woolworth's lunch counter. The cruise down E Street has fallen silent. But in our hearts, there's still a small-town chorus humming beneath the noise of change. It's there in the memory of racing across 10th Street Bridge, in the ghost of a perfect dive at Ellis Lake, in the echo of roller skates against wooden floors.
We carry the Twin Cities with us, wherever we go – a constellation of lights and sounds and tastes that somehow made us who we are. Every homecoming still measured by the sight of the Buttes on the horizon, every belonging judged against the standard of that place and time when we learned what it meant to be from somewhere that knew us by name.
