From competing in the Olympics to representing herself in court, EMU alumna Zara knows what it means to fight for your story to be heard.
PURL 333 students recently heard from Zara, an Olympian, PR professional, and advocate, about her journey from competing on the world stage to representing herself in court. She shared how her PR background helped her understand the power of communication, telling your own story and putting yourself out there. She also talked about using grassroots media, podcasts and social media to make sure her story was heard when traditional media wouldn’t.
Zara showed students what it means to advocate for yourself and never be afraid to use your voice. “When you want something, you go get it.”

Congratulations to EMU’s Lo**ta Cummings on being named HigherEd PodCon’s 2026 Podcaster of the Year!🎉
Lo**ta received the honor at last Thursday’s awards ceremony in Cleveland for the impact of Enlighten U, EMU’s student mental health podcast.

“This award truly belongs to the entire Enlighten U team,” Cummings said. “It validates our shared commitment to improving student mental health and affirms that these conversations are making a meaningful difference in students’ lives.”
