This Friday, October 10th at 12PM EST, our Founder Ms. Courtney Smith will join Youth Action Board Members Caylene and Bobbi for a hybrid panel presented by the University of Michigan Poverty Solutions, discussing meaningful youth engagement through Detroit’s Rapid Rehousing Program.

We know sustainable solutions are built when youth are not just participants but partners in the work. Their lived experiences, insights, and leadership are essential to creating systems that truly work for them.

We’d like to take this opportunity to honor one of our alumni: Tatyana Thaxton!

Tatyana graduated from EMU with a BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice. She was also the recipient of the prestigious O’Dell Scholarship award, one of our highest departmental honors. Since graduation, Tatyana has devoted her career to protecting laborers by promoting environmental health and safety in the workplace. This includes ensuring corporate compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations. She was a Corporate Safety Manager with the Biery Cheese Company, and an Environmental Health and Safety Assistant Manager with Hyundai. Today, Tatyana is a Product Specialist at Delta Plus where she focuses on personal protective equipment (PPE).

Thank you for all you do for workers, Tatyana! Congratulations on your many accomplishments!

Join us in congratulating SAC department secretary Fonda Martin on receiving the 2025 Wanda J. Monks Staff Member of the Year Award!

Fonda was nominated by several of her colleagues, including SAC Department Head, Dr. Julian Murchison, who shared: “Fonda is a wealth of knowledge about the office, processes, and procedures of the university. She draws on that knowledge to effectively manage the work of the department and to troubleshoot when problems arise.”
