As we prepare to welcome our Grizzlies back, here’s an important reminder for the 2026–2027 school year:

First bell to last bell means phones away.

YCS is committed to creating school days with fewer distractions and more opportunities for our scholars to focus, think, create, connect, and learn.

We’re asking all scholars and families to review the updated cell phone expectations, approved exceptions, and disciplinary process before the school year begins.

A new school year means new expectations.

Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Ypsilanti Community Schools will follow a first bell to last bell cell phone expectation. Cell phones and personal wireless communication devices must remain stored away throughout the school day, with approved exceptions for medical needs, accommodations, authorized instructional use, and emergencies.

Our goal is simple: fewer distractions, stronger connections, safer schools, and more opportunities for our scholars to focus on learning.

Families can still reach their scholar during the school day by contacting the school office.

Freshman Grizzlies, your journey starts here. 🐻📚

Parents, guardians, and incoming freshmen, don’t miss our Mandatory Freshman Academy Orientation on Friday, August 28 9:30am at Ypsilanti Community High School.

This orientation is designed to help scholars start the school year prepared, informed, and confident. You’ll learn about the Freshman Academy, graduation expectations, student supports, daily schedules, and how families can stay connected throughout the year.

We can’t wait to welcome the Class of 2030 to Grizzly Nation.

YCHS students LaMarea Tooson and Jeancia Mazama joined Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross to discuss artificial intelligence, student voice, and the importance of having young people help guide how AI is used in schools.

Next month, these student leaders will represent Ypsilanti Community Schools at America’s Youth AI Festival in Boston, where they’ll work alongside students from across the country to debate, draft, and vote on AI policies that could help shape the future of K-12 education.

We’re proud to see our Grizzlies leading the conversation about AI advancements, not just participating in it.

Shoutout to these four 2026 YCHS graduates Dontaze Moore, Ayden Sisson, Roycean Butler, and Ahmad Brown for earning their Digital Audio Industry Certification through skills learned in the Podcasting CTE program.

Proud to see them continuing to stack credentials, build skills, and invest in their future.
