The term "time blindness" refers to a persistent difficulty in managing time and perceiving its passage. Individuals struggling with time blindness often experience frequent tardiness, difficulties in planning their day or meeting deadlines, and may become easily engrossed in time-wasting activities, such as playing video games, without realizing the time elapsed.

Time blindness, or impaired temporal relations, is frequently associated with ADHD, as many children and adults with ADHD struggle to manage their time and may feel that their internal "clock" is faulty.

However, it is possible to experience time blindness without exhibiting other ADHD symptoms, and other conditions, including autism, depression, and neurological impairment resulting from traumatic or nontraumatic brain injury, can also lead to impaired time perception. If left unaddressed, time blindness can significantly negatively impact interpersonal relationships, academic success, or career advancement.

Fortunately, many individuals can acquire cognitive skills to overcome this challenge.

Each individual with dyslexia exhibits a unique pattern of strengths and challenges.

We tend to score exceptionally high in certain areas - often within the top percentiles.

Conversely, in areas where we struggle, our scores are typically very low - often within the bottom percentiles. This phenomenon is referred to as our 'spiky profile'.
That's why it's essential, in both the workplace and classroom, to focus on our strengths - the areas in which we naturally excel - and delegate tasks that pose significant challenges.

Without personalized accommodations, students expend significantly more time on homework, writing papers, reading texts, etc. Assistive technologies, such as text-to-speech software, can provide greater opportunities and equality.

Dyslexia can be diagnosed as early as five years old.

What might dyslexia look like in a 5-year-old?
Your child has had opportunities at home or in preschool to learn the alphabet but has trouble remembering the name of each letter. Despite the child having learning experiences with his/her own name, s/he may not be able to recognize or remember his/her own name's spelling. The student may not be able to detect rhyme in a group of words: not, dot, pot, lot, rot, tot.

Who can give an official dyslexia diagnosis? Psychologists, neuropsychologists, speech-language pathologists--but be sure the professional you choose has experience diagnosing dyslexia. All do not. It could be a waste of time and money to have someone without experience assessing your child. Ask them how many children they've diagnosed with dyslexia. Do your homework. Get referrals from other parents.

Schools usually do not diagnose dyslexia. They can assess for a "specific learning disability" to determine if your child is eligible for special education services. Having the school do that is a step in the right direction to begin receiving appropriate instruction and accommodations.

Children, teens, and adults don't outgrow it. Waiting to see if things are better next year is not the answer. 🧡

Don’t leave reading to chance!

Early identification of dyslexia and timely intervention are crucial.

Delaying identification and intervention until difficulties arise can have detrimental effects on self-esteem and academic performance.

Dr. Sally Shaywitz of Yale Dyslexia emphasizes this importance.

Blurting out isn’t defiance—it’s a skill gap.

Kids need help noticing their impulses, holding their thoughts, waiting for the right time, and then sharing when it’s their turn.

We can’t just say “stop blurting.”
We have to teach the missing skills.

When we shift from punishment to teaching, real progress begins.
