Throwback and Alumni Spotlight!
This wonderful photo was sent to us by the parent of two alumni students who attended MSMV many years ago! This photo was taken in 1983 when the school was located in the Unitarian Church in Youngstown. Pictured in the top right (in the purple shirt) is the school’s founder, Suzanne Stettler.
The photo was submitted by Jack Wendle, father of MSMV alums John and Abigail Wendle. John is pictured in this photo, and Abigail began attending several years later.
John and Abigail are both graduates of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Abigail is a journalist for NPR, and John has been featured in several publications such as Time, National Geographic, and The Wall Street Journal. He spent 5 years reporting in Afghanistan and 4 in Ukraine, and currently lives in Senegal.
We love getting updates about the fantastic things our alumni are doing all over the world! If you have an alumni update or story to share, please let us know.

Adolescent students Hayden Jaskiewicz and Ryan Danyi represented MSMV on the Cardinal Mooney Cross Country team this season, competing in meets against schools from all over the tri-county area.
The boys’ team placed 1st overall in their last meet of the season!
Hayden and Ryan are grateful to the Mooney team for inviting them to participate, and had a great year of pursing their personal goals!
The Mooney team is coached by Bryan Savaet and MSMV Dad, Chris Jaskiewicz.

Our students were so excited for our first Pop-Up Library visit today!
Each student gets their own Pop-Up Library card, and can check out two books to be enjoyed at school until next month, when they will return them and choose two more!

“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking;” - Dr. Maria Montessori
Today, many of our students celebrated the International Day of Peace with their classmates and teachers. Some shared songs and books, others worked together on lessons. Upper Elementary students delivered Peace Flowers to our campus neighbors.
In Montessori classrooms, children learn that they are not only citizens of their classroom and community, but of the world. Their work each day helps them learn to embody a spirit of peace and compassion, and live into their role as global citizens who care for themselves and their neighbors, near and far.

- The Great Lessons
In the Elementary classrooms, learning is not defined by a limited, single-year curriculum - it is driven as far as your child’s imagination will take them. Dr. Montessori understood the power of a child’s mind, and designed a series of “Great Lessons” which ignite imagination and stimulate inquiry throughout the academic program. The Great Lessons begin with “The Birth of the Universe” - an elaborate story told by the teacher with artwork and science experiments - which includes chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, and geography. This lesson inspires students’ imaginations, and becomes the jumping off point for independent exploration of these subjects.
These Lower Elementary students are experiencing the first Great Lesson, and drawing their interpretation of light coming from the darkness.

In the Primary Classroom, Practical Life lessons include things like buttoning, sweeping, and pouring. At the Adolescent level, sometimes practical life means hanging bulletin boards and coat racks to improve the functionality of their space!

The MSMV Board of Trustees is excited to announce our new Executive Director, Brendan Considine! Brendan will officially begin on August 1st, with transition support from our Interim Executive Director and Director of Advancement and Communications, Stephanie Crain.
Brendan is joining us with more than 20 years’ experience working in education, most recently as a Classroom Supervisor at the Rich Center for Autism at Youngstown State University. He comes to us with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Masters in Educational Administration from YSU, as well as a current Ohio Principal License. Brendan is very familiar with the MSMV community and is an active co-op member thanks to his daughter Fleur, who is entering 8th grade at MSMV.
With his extensive history and leadership experience, Brendan is ready to lead us in strengthening the MSMV community so that we can continue to offer the highest quality education to children and adolescents in the Mahoning Valley for many years to come!

Before we wrapped up the school year, our Adolescent students spent 3 days learning, working, and having fun at the Villa Maria Farm! We're so fortunate to have such a wonderful resource in our community. Our students and teachers had a wonderful time, and we always love when our students have opportunities to learn valuable, practical life skills and help in our community at the same time!

In a Montessori Classroom, a child may place their hand on the arm or shoulder of an adult or friend to indicate that they’d like their attention, without interrupting. This is a wonderful display of grace and courtesy. It’s a lesson in patience for the waiting child, but offers reassurance their needs will be met. This wonderful practice is easy to incorporate at home, too!

Earlier this week, Upper El students conducted a water study with guidance from Wild You and learned about the water in our creek and the wildlife living in it.
Upper El has been enjoying visits from Wild You this year and learning so much about our environment!
