Our YSP collegiate team has been busy preparing for our Early Arrival Program and eager to greet our Class of 2024 as they head to Columbus for Move-In Day this weekend! YSP Youngstown is proud to once again provide residence hall essentials to our Scholars. Ms. Tiffany compiled a list of the most requested items. We hope this helps other students as they prepare for their first year of college. Congratulations once again to our Future Buckeyes!

Congratulations, Nariah! Nariah Gillam graduated from Chaney High School and Choffin Career & Technical Center. She was accepted to the University of Akron, Kent State University, and The Ohio State University. She is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University. Nariah plans on majoring in Computer Science Engineering with the goal of becoming a skilled software engineer. The YSP Scholarship is a 4 year (8-semester) scholarship that covers tuition, fees, housing, and food!

Congratulations, Ari! Ari’anna Bankston graduated from Youngstown Rayen Early College High School (YREC) and received her Associate of Arts from Youngstown State University. At YREC, she was inducted into the National Honor Society and was accepted to Youngstown State University, Central State University, and Wilberforce University. Ari’anna was selected by her peers as the YSP Youngstown 2024 Outstanding Senior and honored during the Ohio State Commitment Ceremony held at The Ohio State University in May. She is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University majoring in Radiologic Sciences and Therapy. Her goal is to pursue a career as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. The YSP Scholarship is a 4 year (8-semester) scholarship that covers tuition, fees, housing, and food!

Congratulations, Ja’Sean! Ja’Sean Rushton graduated from Valley Christian High School. While at Valley Christian he served as Vice President of National Honor Society and was crowned Prom King. In 2021, he had the honor of winning “Best of Show” in Ohio’s 13th District Congressional Art Competition where his picture was hung in the Capital Building for one year. Ja’Sean was accepted to Clark Atlanta University, North Carolina Central University, Florida A&M, Kent State University, University of Akron, and the University of Cincinnati. He is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University. Additionally, Ja’Sean received the O.A.R Heard of the World Scholarship, a partnership of the Ohio State University Foundation and the band O.A.R., in the amount of $6,100. Ja’Sean plans on majoring in marketing. The YSP Scholarship is a 4 year (8-semester) scholarship that covers tuition, fees, housing, and food!

Congratulations, Ma’Kayla! Ma’Kayla Rosendary received her high school diploma from Youngstown Rayen Early College High School (YREC) and Associate of Arts from Youngstown State University (YSU). She was elected President of the National Honor Society and was a YSU Dean’s List recipient. She received the Governor’s Merit Scholarship in the amount of $4000 and the YWCA’s Women with Bright Futures scholarship of $500. Ma’Kayla was accepted to Cleveland State University, Kent State University, and Central State University. She is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University. Ma’Kayla plans on majoring in Chemistry with the goal of pursuing dermatology or cosmetic chemistry. The YSP Scholarship is a 4 year (8-semester) scholarship that covers tuition, fees, housing, and food!

Congratulations, Hannah! Hannah Daily graduated from Chaney High School and Choffin Career & Technical Center, receiving credentials in Early Childhood Education. Hannah was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society and received the 2024 Outstanding Senior Award for Early Childhood Education. She was accepted to Thiel College and received a generous scholarship package. Hannah is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University majoring in Social Work. Congratulations, NeVaeh! NeVaeh Shouse Received her high school diploma from Youngstown Rayen Early College High School (YREC) and Associate of Arts from Youngstown State University (YSU). While at YREC, NeVaeh was elected Class President and Vice President of the National Honor Society. NeVaeh participated in many community service and volunteer initiatives like YUMADOP, and My Brothers Keeper. At YSU, she was awarded Dean’s List and President’s list. She received the Governor’s Merit Scholarship in the amount of $5000 and received the 2024 J.L. Francis Scholarship, First Place Community Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, in the amount of $1,000. NeVaeh was accepted to Case Western Reserve University. NeVaeh is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University. NeVaeh plans on majoring in Biochemistry with the goal of pursuing medical school for internal medicine/pediatrics. The YSP Scholarship is a 4 year (8-semester) scholarship that covers tuition, fees, housing, and food!

Congratulations Fa’Rah! Fa’Rah Little graduated from Chaney High School as Valedictorian. While at Chaney, she was inducted into the Chaney Honor Society and participated in many community service and volunteer initiatives. Fa’Rah was accepted into Villanova University, the University of Southern California (Marshall School of Business), Howard University, and the College of Wooster. In addition to YSP, Fa’Rah was a participant in the Youngstown Early Identification Program (YEIP) also known as the Wooster Youngstown Scholars. She was awarded Wooster’s Dean Scholarship totaling $160,000 for 4 years. Additionally, Fa’Rah received the Governor’s Merit Scholarship in the amount of $5000 and received the 2024 J.L. Francis Scholarship, First Place Community Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, in the amount of $1,000. Fa’Rah is a recipient of the Young Scholars Program scholarship and will attend THE Ohio State University. The YSP Scholarship is a 4 year (8-semester) scholarship that covers tuition, fees, housing, and food!

We have been busy getting ready for our signature summer programming! Campus visits complement the experiences scholars have during the academic year, and the summer overnight visits prepare students for what they will experience in the upcoming year's curriculum. The combination of campus visits and summer overnight programs provides scholars with valuable opportunities to familiarize themselves with the campus environment, faculty, and staff, ultimately preparing them for their academic endeavors.

The City of Youngstown and the United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley have partnered to launch the Downtown Recovery Fund, a central location for monetary donations to be collected for relief efforts regarding the explosion that occurred in downtown Youngstown last week.

Every aspiring Young Scholar must receive a nomination from a teacher in a core subject area, a principal, or their school counselor. Youngstown YSP received a record number of applications from talented 8th graders at Chaney Middle School, East Middle School, and Rayen Early College Middle School. Scholarship Opportunity for current or former foster youth: The Ohio Reach Scholarship application is open as of March 11, 2024. The deadline to apply is May 31, 2024 by 5pm. Eligibility: The applicant must have been in the custody of a children's services agency after the age of 13. Ohio high school students must have accepted an offer from a post-secondary institution in Ohio. Application and additional eligibility criteria can be found on the website below

Thank you to the following Young Scholar volunteers who served on our YSP Youngstown Interview Team on April 17 and April 18. We're proud of your leadership! 9th grade: Heaven Sadler, Georgia Thurston, Tavia Williams; 10th grade: Jaysean Garcia, William Wallace; 11th grade: Car'Laya Hammonds, Niamya Labooth, Shaleyna Torres-Sierra. By volunteering, Scholars were able to strengthen their public speaking and communication skills, network with community leaders and YSP alumni, and earn community service hours needed for their high school diploma.
