In collaboration with the Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Assoc (MVARA), scholars learned the basics of Amateur Radio (a.k.a. Ham Radio). Amateur radio has a variety of uses such as civil service, emergency communications, contests, hobbies, etc. At each of the four stations, scholars within our Y-STEAM program explored this technology field. Scholars learned about Morse code, the oldest form of radio communication; they learned each letter of the alphabet and how to communicate their name and SOS using Morse code.

At the next station, scholars learned how antennas work, including the basics of waves and meters. The third station allowed them to talk to another club member locally through a high-frequency radio station. Finally, the fourth station consisted of the newest form of amateur radio, which combines radio waves and the internet—Scholars were able to talk to people in Scotland, England, Tennessee, and Colorado.

November is National Scholarship Month. Sponsored by the National Scholarship Providers Association, National Scholarship Month is about building awareness of college scholarships. National Scholarship Month is a way for all of us to celebrate our common goal of helping all scholars interested in going to college access scholarships. An estimated $100 million in scholarships goes unawarded each year. This result is mostly due to a lack of applicants. There's plenty of money out there to help pay tuition. We are challenging our high school seniors to each apply for ten scholarships this year. Our school counselors are here to help.

Actor Otis Winston had a warm homecoming as he visited YCSD on Friday, November 4. Otis spoke about growing up in the North Side projects and persevering through adversity. He challenged our scholars to believe in themselves and not let anyone's opinion stop them from being who they are meant to be. You can catch Otis in movies like Greenland, Venom, and the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Thank you, Otis, for your inspiration. And thank you to Board of Education member Mr. Donaldson for coordinating this special visit!

During the week of November 7-11, 2022, schools throughout the country are celebrating National School Psychology Week (NSPW) to highlight the important work school psychologists do to help scholars thrive. This year's theme, "Together We Shine," is derived from how we see hope after several challenging years. We have all faced difficulties created by the pandemic, social injustice and inequity, economic stress, and challenges to mental and physical health. For some, it has been a time of real darkness, and finding light is critical to building resilience and hope. Yet, we shine even brighter together as individuals and as a community.

We appreciate our school psychologists for helping to connect with scholars and staff to highlight how each person's contribution to the collective can lead us forward. Just as we continue developing individually and with our own skills through collaboration and with support from others, we, in turn, can help others foster resilience and support those who need it.

Remembering the phrase, spring forward and fall back, is a mnemonic relating to Daylight Saving Time, reminding us that clocks are moved forward an hour in SPRING and back an hour in FALL. Remember to set your clocks BACK one hour today, November 6. We look forward to seeing scholars back in school tomorrow!
