The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Coding teaches problem solving, resilience, computational thinking, and the design process. Computer Science is one of the fastest growing and highest paid career fields. The average salary is $96,393. Next year's YCSD Hour of Code goal is 1,500 scholars!

Almost 800 scholars from Bunn, Harding, Kirkmere, MLK, Taft, Chaney MS, RECMS, East MS, East HS, and Chaney HS gathered at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown to enjoy the Nutcracker. One of the highlights from this all-district event was celebrating our very own Chaney dance teacher, Mr. Cotton. He was the Nutcracker and our scholars showed him so much love. Hopefully, this exceptional experience will inspire every YCSD scholar to pursue their dreams and pave their own paths. Thank you Mr. Cotton for sharing your gifts with us. A special thanks to the Ballet Western Reserve for your invitation!

It is with a heavy heart that we are sharing the news that two of our middle schools recently experienced sudden tragedies. We mourn East Middle School scholar Logan Taylor, who passed away earlier this month. The other scholar's name from a separate incident has not been made public, so we are unable to confirm their identity at this time. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to both families and our school families for these untimely losses.

Logan loved basketball. With his family's blessing, East Middle School will host a Celebration of Life basketball tournament in Logan's memory on Tuesday, November 21, during school hours. The basketball tournament will be a way for scholars and staff to celebrate Logan’s life and leave for the Thanksgiving Holiday on a positive note.

For all scholars and staff, wrap-around support from the district's social workers and counselors is available and on hand to provide emotional support.

It is unfathomable to articulate into words the loss of one child, let alone two. We encourage you to please check in on one another and be a source of comfort for each other during this challenging time.

National Parent Involvement Day is November 16. The day provides a yearly opportunity for schools and families to honor and highlight the powerful contributions parents and caregivers provide at school and home to support scholar success. Let's work together to make this national campaign for school improvement and parental involvement last more than just one day—it should be emphasized all year long. Our Parent Engagement Coordinators are available to provide parenting resources. Thank you, parents and caregivers!

Our schools couldn't operate without custodial and maintenance workers, food service staff, teacher and library aides, campus technology support staff, bus drivers, data clerks and countless other education support professionals. Education Support Professionals Week is a time to recognize these individuals' valuable role and their positive impact on our school community. Let's thank those who work behind the scenes, supporting scholars and helping schools run smoothly.
