Meet faculty member Dr. Amanda Fehlbaum!
Dr. Fehlbaum received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oklahoma in 2014 and joined the Youngstown State University faculty in the Fall of 2014 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences (formerly Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Gerontology). She is currently the Director of the Women's and Gender Studies program. She was a contributor to the Sociology in Focus blog. Dr. Fehlbaum achieved tenure and promotion to Associate Professor as of Fall of 2020. In 2022, she was awarded the YSU Distinguished Professor in Service Award.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Fehlbaum is a proud member of several professional groups, including the American Sociological Association, Sociologists for Women in Society, and the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence. Her most notable areas of research include gender and s*xuality, bodies and embodiment, s*x education, culture and media, feminism, the family, and qualitative methods.
Trailblazers like Dr. Fehlbaum are faculty members we hold near and dear. Without them, we wouldn't be on the progressive path we are today. We are forever fortunate to have such intelligent and passionate folks paving the way for future generations of Penguins to come. 🐧❤️

Meet Dr. Paul Yarab!
Dr. Paul Yarab began his journey with Youngstown State University with his Bachelor's in Psychology, graduating in 1993. Throughout his enrollment, he had to opportunity to form strong relationships with his professors, opening up a plethora of new doors in his career. He conducted research alongside Psychology professors on campus, which ultimately resulted in impressive conference presentations! Following his Bachelor's, Yarab attended Bowling Green State University and earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. in 1999 in the field of Social Psychology. While enrolled, Yarab conducted numerous research studies on jealousy and infidelity. At the time, he never saw himself as becoming a professor - he had a terrible fear of public speaking! But alas, after teaching a few classes here and there, he realized that being an educator was the career for him! Before heading back to YSU, Yarab stayed at Bowling Green for a few years, as well as Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo for 18 years. In his time at Mercy, Dr. Yarab developed a variety of psychology courses that investigate people and behavior in many different contexts. Here are some word of wisdom, courtesy of Dr. Paul Yarab:
"I talk to everyone, or should I say they talk to me; I have invisible writing on my forehead that says, 'Talk to me and tell me everything about your life – even if I don’t know you.' I just love psychology - I'm not exactly sure why! I guess people in general just interest me. It was [odd] coming back to YSU as a professor, especially since there are professors still here that I had as an undergraduate. [I] love it here. [We have] a great work environment in the Psych Department. The one thing I was a little worried about teaching here was that I thought I’d totally lose getting to know my students as YSU is a bigger campus. But, I am now seeing that I am getting to know the students as I have had many of you more than once. I have now worked with quite a few students on Honors projects and I am looking to start doing research again with undergraduates. I am also looking at ways to work along side students who do not want to go to graduate school to see what other options are out there. You guys are really what makes this job so much fun - and I mean that. Sometimes you give me a gray hair or two, but I just think back to when I was here."

Meet Molly Burdette!
Molly's history with Youngstown State started in 1989 when she entered the university as a transfer student. Molly graduated with her undergrad in Psychology, while raising two children of her own, then went straight on for her Masters' degree. In 2000, she graduated with MSEd in Community Counseling and a fourth baby on the way. Molly became a part-time faculty member in 2001, starting her journey in education, teaching Psychology. A few years later in 2007, she moved on to teaching Communication. Throughout her time at YSU, Molly has earned a Graduate certificate in Instructional Communication. Molly started her current position, Program Coordinator/Academic Advisor for General Studies in October 2005. The program was expected to see only a few students graduate each semester, but has expanded to graduate around 100 students per year! This ranks it as one of the top 5 majors for highest number of graduates each semester within the last decade!
Here are a few words of wisdom from Molly herself:
"As I prepare to leave my position as Academic Advisor of General Studies located in DeBartolo Hall, I’m thinking back over my long history at YSU. I started here as a transfer student [myself]. I love going to graduation each semester and see all of my students cross the stage and earn their degree, knowing how hard they worked and the sacrifices they made in order to reach their goal of graduating. Every student has a story. I've been involved in many committees and groups during my time on campus, getting to know faculty, staff and students in so many different areas on campus. YSU has been a second home to me for so much of my life. I'm so excited to be staying on campus and taking on a new role as Assistant Director, Degree Completion, and Credentialing Facilitator!"

We’re so lucky to have advisors like Molly who care so much about her students! 🐧❤️

Meet Jessica Basile! Jess has been a part of the penguin family for four years, serving as our American Sign Language (ASL) instructor. In addition to YSU, Jess has been teaching ASL at the high school level for the past 10 years - and she created the program at her school, too!

"It's my passion to bring awareness to the hearing world by reaching as many students as I can. We can easily learn to sign however Deaf people can never learn to hear. By providing access and awareness to them we can break communication barriers and make everyday struggles easier. Human connection in a phono-centric world is a privilege that we have, and I hope we can use that privilege to provide that same basic need to Deaf people."

Jess is actively pursuing her Ph.D from Gallaudet University, the world's only Deaf university, to help educate hearing people about providing access to natural language for Deaf children. Though Jess may be hearing, she has fully immersed herself in Deaf culture with passion, respect, and dedication in a way most individuals lack the courage to do.

We're beyond grateful for all of the work Jess has done here at YSU and off campus, as well as the impact she's left on so many students!

Meet YSU Junior Jamie Knutti, our Social Media Representative here at BCLASSE! Jamie is a Psychology major with a minor in Sociology. Aside from running our social media pages, she is a member of Dean's Dozen, YSU's Hip Hop Team, and the Honors College.
"One of my favorite aspects of YSU is the community. No matter who you are, faculty members are here to help and I am forever grateful for that. I wouldn't have the success stories I do without my support system cheering me on. My professors genuinely love what they do - and that's had a major impact on my educational experience. I've easily come across some of the best educators here. Professors like Jess Basile that are extremely passionate and immersed in their subject have inspired me to never settle for a career that doesn't bring me authentic joy. I can't express how grateful I am for everything YSU has offered me."
Jamie hopes to graduate in the spring of 2023 with her Bachelors degree, followed by starting the lengthy journey of earning her PhD in Clinical Psychology.

We'd like to take a moment and brag about our incredibly talented and intelligent students and faculty from our School Psychology Program! Keep reading!

Youngstown State University (YSU) and the University of Manchester (UoM) began an innovative collaboration in March 2020. Subsequently, the School Psychology Program published an article reflecting on student and faculty experiences of this initial collaboration in International School Psychology Association's ‘World Go Round.’ Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the collaboration has continued to grow in exciting and innovative ways, including a collaborative presentation at the National Association of School Psychologists in Boston, Ma. in February of 2022. On March 25th, 2022 approximately 60 YSU and UoM faculty and students will reunite to participate in a virtual symposium to explore similarities and differences in school/educational psychologist practice in the area of girls and autism. This experience will provide a catalyst for students and faculty to reflect critically on this common practice area. Faculty and student presentations from both universities will be shared and discussion will be greatly encouraged.

We're so proud of the innovative folks we have here at YSU and are beyond lucky to have them represent BCLASSE and the university as a whole. Keep up the great work, Penguins! We can't wait to hear all about your experiences!

The history program at Youngstown State University is proud to host the 2022 Robert W. Reeder I Distinguished Lecture in Nineteenth Century History! This year’s lecture will be delivered by Dr. Hilary N. Green and will be held virtually on March 24, at 5:30 pm.

Each spring, the Reeder endowment brings a nationally-renowned scholar in the field of nineteenth-century American history to the YSU campus.

Dr. Green’s lecture is entitled “Remembering Gettysburg: Joseph Winters, Songs and Civil War Memory.” Focusing on a Black songwriter, this lecture explores how Joseph Winters contributed to African American memory of the American Civil War and the Gettysburg campaign through songwriting. By documenting the African American experience during the Gettysburg campaign, Green will show how Winters continued to draw on this local memory for securing Black men’s vote in the 1876, 1880 and 1912 Presidential campaigns.

Dr. Hilary N. Green is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender and Race Studies at The University of Alabama. She earned her M.A. in History from Tufts University and her Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is the author of Educational Reconstruction: African American Schools in the Urban South, 1865-1890 (Fordham University Press, 2016) as well as numerous articles, book chapters and other scholarly publications.

Meet Dr. Ying “Joy” Tang! Dr. Tang is an Associate Professor in Psychology here at YSU. Beyond teaching a variety of courses on campus, she helped create Psychology Program’s first study-abroad experience and took a group of students on a life-changing trip to China in 2019. Dr. Tang is a productive researcher: she has successfully completed work that is published by prestigious outlets such as the American Psychologist and Oxford University Press. Her wide-ranging interdisciplinary research collaboration with colleagues from diverse backgrounds has led to creative projects such a computer game ReWIND that incorporates principles from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to help individuals alleviate anxiety. Beyond her extensive service on campus, she has assumed various leadership roles locally, serving on the board of the YWCA Mahoning Valley. Nationally, Dr. Tang most notably served as the co-chair of the Committee on Academic Feminist Psychology in the American Psychological Association Division 35 from 2017-2021. Dr. Tang is devoted to the success of her students and empowering them to chase whatever career goals they desire. Her constant dedication to everyone she takes under her wing is admirable. Talented female leaders like Dr. Tang have paved the way for past, present, and future Penguins alike, making her the ultimate trailblazer.
