Youngstown State Alumni - Lgbtq+ Alumni Chapter

In celebration of Pride Month, we’re honored to feature alumni who share what Pride means to them! Be sure to check out Youngstown State Alumni - Lgbtq+ Alumni Chapter.
Hi! Back in the '80s I was in a history of costume design class with Ms. Jane Shanabarger (sp?) as our teacher. We had a light blue textbook that she said was the "bible" of clothing history. (I'm paraphrasing but she did say "bible.") I have looked all over the internet to find this, as I stupidly got rid of it when moving. Are there any other old people who used to be in the theater department who may be book hoarders or remember specifics about this book? I NEED only that book for the enhanced enjoyment of history, historical fiction, and movies.

We are the LGBTQ+ alumni and allies of YSU. All alumni and allies are welcome to engage with us!

Youngstown State Alumni Engagement

🌈 Spreading Love, Acceptance, and Pride from Youngstown State University this Pride Month!

Pride Month serves as a reminder that love is love, and everyone deserves to be respected and celebrated for who they are. It's a time to honor the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history and to continue advocating for equality and human rights. May this Pride Month be filled with joy, love, and acceptance for all members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as their allies. Stay tuned for events happening on campus through out the month!

The YSU LGBTQ+ Alumni Chapter set up the Student Emergency Fund in 2021 to foster equity at YSU for current students that identify as LGBTQ and are experiencing a financial hardship. The focus is to bridge the socioeconomic gap that exists for students who are disenfranchised due to factors beyond their control. This assistance provides a more equitable opportunity to obtain an education and advance toward goals of stability and self-sufficiency.

The YSU Dean of Students Office advises students of resources available to them and administers the fund. Assistance continues to be provided and donations to the fund are greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate, visit the YSU Foundation link below, click "Other" for your gift designation, and type "LGBTQ+ Student Emergency Fund" in the gift details box. Thank you for your generosity toward helping Penguins in need!

Happy 2023! Hope the year to come brings you all happiness and joy. Looking forward to connecting more through new events and opportunities!

Not only is Betty Haynes-Jacobs, LSW an outstanding student, but a powerful community leader, volunteer, and advocate. During her associate degree program, Betty completed an internship at the LGBT Center of Greater Cleveland and realized that lives were being lost due to the lack of LGBTQ+ specific support in her community. In response to this need Betty founded LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County, the first and only LGBTQ+ nonprofit serving at-risk children, adults, and their families in Lake County. Since its founding, Betty has led many advocacy & outreach efforts such as pursuing a non-discrimination ordnance for Lake County, promoting the Ohio Fairness Act, serving as the Great Lakes regional director of PFLAG, and working with a local youth behavioral health agency to develop residential treatment programming focused on LGBTQ+ youth in the child welfare system. Betty’s passion for social work, and especially serving the LGBTQ+ population, is a perfect example of the impact students can make even before they finish their degrees.

Join us in celebrating Betty Haynes-Jacobs and our other winners at the Social Work Celebration Gala on June 18th in Columbus, OH. Mark your calendar!

Gender is more complicated than you think, let's listen more to Transgender & Intersexed people and judge less. Watch this video and imagine how your life would be impacted if the medical industry did this to your body without your consent simply to meet gender cultural norms.
How does the dominant culture impact your decisions daily? What would you do differently if you felt safe to be your authentic self?
