Take eight motivated college students, pair them with older adults living with dementia, and it all adds up to beautiful, colorful art – and lasting relationships.
That’s what happened this Fall semester as students in Youngstown State University’s Sociology of Dementia course implemented the Opening Minds through Art program with a handful of residents at Danridge’s Burgundi Manor long-term care facility on Youngstown’s East Side.
The award-winning intergenerational art-making program, headquartered at the Scripps Gerontology Center at the University of Miami (Ohio), encourages people with dementia to rely on their imaginations (instead of memory) and to focus on their remaining strengths (instead of lost skills), enabling them to assume new roles as artists and teachers and to leave a legacy of beautiful artwork.
The program is in place at dozens of locations across the United States, from California to Massachusetts, as well as many spots across Canada. For more information click on link below:

The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services Dean's Office cancelled the 12th Annual Alumni Recognition Dinner on Friday, September 24th at the Embassy due to spikes in COVID-19. There were seven members of the community who have made significant contributions to our community by continuing to provide optimal service and care to our communities while adroitly responding to healthcare and human services challenges brought about the current pandemic. Five members of the college also received the "Dean's Appreciation" award for making significant contributions to the college. While deciding to cancel the in-person event involved much debate and deliberation, it was indeed the right decision for a college with health/human services as its central mission. The recipients of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services Alumni and Dean's Appreciation Awards will be publicly honored at next years schedule Alumni Recognition Dinner.
