Thank you to Congressman Michael Rulli for taking the time to visit Cushwa Hall at Youngstown State University today!
During his visit, Congressman Rulli met with faculty and students in our Youngstown State University Physical Therapy program, toured our labs, and learned more about how YSU is preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
We appreciate the opportunity to showcase the outstanding work happening within our programs and to discuss the important role healthcare education plays in serving our communities and workforce needs.

In 2023, Danyell York Logan and Jen Smaltz accompanied the Youngstown State University counseling, nursing, and social work faculty led study abroad delegation to Rwanda. They provided school-based social and emotional support and workshops.
This year, the social work alumni returned as independent practitioners and provided the master class on Tools for Resilience: Managing Stress and Emotional Impact in Trauma Work- three different times to clinical psychologists, social workers, counselors, faculty of University of Rwanda, and other health practitioners in Huye, Rwanda. This is a photo of the first participants.
Students do become teachers.
What an example of what happens when you Know your “Y,” and live it❣️

Although the 2026 Nursing and Social Work study abroad trip to Rwanda was canceled due to Ebola concerns, students still gained meaningful lessons from the experience. As shared by Sherri Harper Woods, Associate Professor of Social Work, nursing and social work students gained insight into the ethical challenges healthcare professionals face during public health emergencies, including balancing patient care with personal safety. Students showed resilience, compassion, and support while navigating disappointment and witnessing leadership decisions focused on health and safety.
Students also experienced the cultures of Brussels and Paris, turning challenges into opportunities for growth, connection, and a deeper understanding of global health and human services. We are proud of our students and faculty for representing BCHHS with resilience, compassion, and professionalism throughout this experience. 🐧🗺️
