History & Philosophy . . . . . . .

I will be the first to admit that I use the trite expression, “good fences make good neighbors,” and there are many times when this is true. However, do we consider the possibility of a path often enough? Are we building fences where a path would be better, kinder, more neighborly?

“It isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”— Eleanor Roosevelt• ✱﹋

People have two basic needs: Authenticity and Attachment.

Maté argues that when parents or caregivers reject or discourage a child’s authentic expressions—be it through criticism, punishment, or neglect—the child faces a painful dilemma. To maintain the essential attachment and avoid the threat of rejection, the child may suppress their authentic self.

Attachment: This is the deep emotional bond between a child and their caregivers, crucial for the child’s survival and emotional development. A child’s primary instinct is to maintain and secure this bond.

Authenticity: This refers to being true to oneself, expressing one’s true feelings, desires, and needs.
Conflict Between Attachment and Authenticity

Long-Term Impact: Over time, this suppression can lead to a disconnection from one’s true feelings and desires, as the child learns to prioritize the attachment over their own authenticity.

This disconnection can contribute to various emotional and psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, and a lack of self-identity. Maté emphasizes that many adults continue to struggle with this conflict, often feeling unable to assert their true selves in relationships and life choices.

Parental Influence: When parental love and acceptance are perceived as conditional—dependent on the child’s behavior conforming to the parents’ expectations—the child learns to mold themselves to these conditions, further distancing from their authentic self.

Healing Through Authenticity: Maté suggests that healing involves reclaiming one’s authenticity, understanding the origins of these conflicts, and learning to express and honor one’s true self while still maintaining healthy relationships. 06/30/2024
