“On Mondays, I often come to school full of ideas, full of goals, full of everything I want to fill the students with. But they come empty. They have been filled over the weekend. They have been with their family. They have been with their own thoughts and their own desires. So instead, on this particular Monday, I sat and I waited. I watched. I took it all in. I saw those who were confused, those who were tired, those who weren’t ready to still their bodies. It was not a time of concentration.

But then I waited. And, by 10:00, a time that is usually full of transition, everyone was settled. It happened on its own. I did not demand it or require it. One new student who has not felt confident making decisions thus far, chose her own work and went deeply into it. I did not stuff her full of lessons or expectations. I simply waited and prepared an environment that would suit her needs when she was ready to decide. And then the moment came. She made a choice and never looked back.”

Montessori is unique in the structure of its days—that it both offers structure and a rigorous curriculum, while also cultivating the motivation and internal organization energy of the students. They are able to thrive because, ultimately, the discipline that develops is their own, because of moments just like this.
