What a great way to build a deeper connection with our children! I was guilty as charged and an answer I'd hear often was "decent". Great questions to go deeper with our precious children❤️

“How was your day?” gets a one word answer almost EVERY time and it’s not because your child doesn’t want to talk to you. It’s because it’s too big a question.
Young children (and honestly, older ones too) don’t have the cognitive scaffolding to retrieve and summarise an entire day on demand. Their brains aren’t built that way yet. When we ask something that open ended, we’re essentially asking them to do something neurologically hard and “fine” is the easiest exit. The questions here do something else. They’re specific. They point your child’s brain at a single moment, a single feeling, a single person. That’s a much smaller ask and it opens the door.
1. What made you laugh today?
2. Did anything surprise you?
3. Who did you sit next to at lunch?
4. What was the best part of your day, and the worst?
5. Did you help anyone today, or did someone help you?
6. What’s something you’re still thinking about?
7. If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?
8. Did you learn anything that felt hard?
9. What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
10. Is there anything on your mind that you haven’t told me yet?
A few things worth knowing: Laughter is one of the easiest memories to access. Starting there puts your child in a positive state before the harder conversations “Is there anything on your mind you haven’t told me yet?” sounds simple but it’s one of the most powerful things you can say to a child. It signals that you’re available, that nothing is too small, and that you won’t react badly. Children file that away. Connection at the end of the day matters more than the information you get from it. These questions aren’t an interrogation they’re an invitation.
