We are excited to welcome our new colleague in Mass Communication and the new WVYC Radio Station Manager, Dr. Brian Gregory!

Dr. Gregory started doing music shows in the radio station at James Madison University. “I would finish a show and not go to sleep and then go to class the next day.” He has significant experience in audio mastering, the last step before an audio goes off to get manufactured. He has also worked on film sets and in post-production sound design.

Dr. Gregory studied communication and education at Columbia University, where he became interested in the history of sound. His dissertation focused on the history of radio and education. He also just finished a book that is coming out in February called “Listening Sound in the Battle for an Educated Democracy in 20th Century America.”

Dr. Gregory has done freelance work for years. One of his first projects was for a friend at NYU when they needed a sound engineer. He’s done freelance TV and independent companies. He built his own studio in his New York apartment. Because New York is so loud, he would mix audio at night. Gregory would invite clients over, record natural sounds from the city, and build a huge sound library.

This semester, he is teaching two radio practicum classes, one of which is an intro class for creating radio and station promotions as well as hosting their own radio shows. The second is a Sport Media practicum class. The first assignment included interviewing an athlete and writing a short piece to record and edit, with a keen ear for sound.

Please join us in welcoming our new Mass Communication faculty member, Professor Madison Hill.

“I always say, being a documentary filmmaker, you have to be mutable–especially in this day and age where film work is harder to come by. You have to be open to doing whatever,” said Madison Hill.

Professor Madison Hill has worked in mass communications for 10 years. She earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech University and her MFA at Duke University. She taught for one year at Duke after graduate school, and then taught at the University of North Carolina. She started this fall at York College as an Assistant Professor in Mass Communication.

Professor Hill has worked on many documentaries, but the most notable one to her is “Fallout”; it involved a military facility in Southwest Virginia that manufactured am******on, rockets, and mortars for the United States Army. They would openly burn their waste as part of the manufacturing process. “Obviously, a lot of people in the area are sick, and some people connect it to the burning, so I did a documentary based on that,” Hill said. A portion of her work focuses on social justice and environmentalism, and she has also worked at PBS on a traditional historical documentary.

Outside of her productions and teaching life, Professor Hill is an avid traveler. She lived in Italy for a while between undergrad and grad school, and so was able to visit all around Europe–Scotland was her favorite, but Macedonia also stood out to her. A road trip to the Grand Canyon is still on her bucket list.

Her advice to current college students is to utilize the resources available to you now: “Connection with your people within the community, whether it be other students or faculty members joining the organizations. I say this a lot in my classes, and I’m sure my students roll their eyes–but attending classes. I sometimes wouldn’t attend a class in undergrad, and I regret that because so much is happening.”

Shane August ’28 is turning his passion for video into a growing business.

Always August Productions helps clients tell their stories through video production and photography. Now, Shane is taking the next step in his entrepreneurial journey through York College’s J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, where he has access to workspace, mentorship, and a community of fellow entrepreneurs.

“The Incubator space in particular means a lot to me,” Shane said. “Having a dedicated place to create makes it so much easier to bring my ideas to life and be more creative with my projects.”

“I would tell you a good bucket list item for me right now, truly, is coming in here, doing this work, doing it because this is my alma mater; I care about it. This might be my way to contribute and start a pipeline of students that I have, who do exceptionally well–who are deserving of opportunities in newsrooms. Perhaps I can create that pipeline, and they’ll find a love for it like I did,” James Tully said.

Former Mass Communications undergraduate, James Tully, has had an active career since his time at York College.

From Harrisburg to Florida, and back to York, Tully has won a local news Emmy for best anchor and is nominated again this year for a story that he worked on with his photographer, Nick Waldner, about “the train collector.”

Outside of work, Tully enjoys skydiving (he has gone twice), roller coasters, and was even lucky enough to fly with the Blue Angels–a highly skilled group of pilots who do stunts and tricks all around the country. The Blue Angels even “ruined roller coasters” for Tully.

When looking back at his undergraduate classes, he remarks that “I know what I needed to know, and I know what I did not.” In other words, Tully is aware of what the college taught him that was essential to his career, and knows what he can add to help students be successful in the industry.

Over the summer, Dr. Zerbe published "Empirical Writing Assessment and the Identity Crisis in Science" in Composition Studies, a highly regarded journal in Rhetoric and Composition (often called Writing Studies).

This article focuses on the assessment of student writing. A process involving what students are able to learn and their proficiency in writing rather than a grade that may also involve attendance, participation, etc.

“As an empirical process, writing assessment follows the scientific method. It is the subject of a lot of research. My main area of research is the rhetoric of science and medicine, but I also have a lot of experience with assessment, most of which comes from my three stints as the FCO coordinator (which Dr. Peck is doing currently). This article combines these two areas: assessment and the rhetoric of science. My main argument is that assessment researchers and practitioners are not up to speed on major discussions and developments in the sciences that potentially have enormous consequences for how science is perceived and practiced. Specifically, some scientists are questioning the validity and reliability of a lot of scientific research. I call these discussions and developments an "identity crisis."’ -Dr. Zerbe
