One of YC-LLI’s greatest strengths is our connection to the York community, and opportunities like this allow our members to learn directly from the people and organizations that help shape it.

We are grateful to The York Water Company and President and CEO JT Hand for welcoming YC-LLI members and personally leading a tour of the company’s historic building. JT’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and willingness to engage with every question made the experience especially meaningful.

As one member shared, “Many of us were so impressed that the President of the company did the tour. He was informative and so enthusiastic. I could listen to him all day.”

Another member noted, “The president himself gave the tour and had a gift for presentation and audience engagement. He treated every question as an opportunity to educate. We learned a lot about the beautiful building and water delivery systems.”

YC-LLI members enjoyed a wonderful morning exploring the York County Master Gardeners’ 50-bed Demonstration Garden at John Rudy Park, learning from the experts who help maintain this incredible living classroom.

From vegetables, fruit trees, and herbs to native plants, flowers, unique edible crops, and even a composting site, there was much to discover! Members also enjoyed mini-lessons throughout the gardens and learned about the history and purpose behind this special community resource.

YC-LLI members recently explored health and wellness through the lens of Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine, with a special focus on supporting lung health during the autumn and winter months.

Participants learned about nutrition and other ways to support lung health, practiced breathing techniques and gentle Qigong movements, and finished with a calming meditation.

Thank you to Tammy Bray, our instructor, for sharing her knowledge and helping members explore practical ways to support wellness through movement, breath, and mindfulness!

Learning Across Generations

One of the unique opportunities that comes with YC-LLI membership is connecting with York College students through meaningful intergenerational learning experiences.

Recently, students in Dr. Corey Brooks’s Policy and History in York course spent time with YC-LLI members listening to their perspectives on challenges facing older adults, policies that have positively impacted their lives, and areas where they believe change is needed.

These conversations give students the opportunity to learn from lived experience while giving YC-LLI members a chance to share their knowledge and wisdom with the next generation.

Lifelong learning goes both ways!

The Craft Club is growing!

Every Tuesday morning, YC-LLI members gather to work on their own craft projects, share ideas, and, just as importantly, get to know one another. What started as a shared interest is becoming a welcoming community of crafters!

Member-led clubs give you the opportunity to connect with fellow lifelong learners around shared interests, outside the classroom and at times that work for the group.

How it works:
• Member-led: Clubs are initiated and managed by YC-LLI members.
• Staff-supported: YC-LLI staff can help promote your club and, when appropriate, reserve campus space for gatherings.
• Free to participate: Club participation is included with an active YC-LLI membership.

SPARTAN SPOTLIGHT

We are fortunate to have such experienced and knowledgeable faculty at York College of Pennsylvania!

Thank you to Tamara Schwartz, Associate Professor in YCP’s Graham School of Business, for sharing her expertise with LLI members last week through AI, Deepfakes, and Synthetic Media: Navigating the New Reality.

Her course sparked thoughtful discussion about the opportunities, challenges, and rapidly evolving world of AI. One member shared:

“An expert in her field and in instructing. Very impressive. This class should be offered again; everyone needs a chance to hear all this.”

A big thank you to our colleague Jess Zortman, Director of the Urban Collaborative at the York College Center for Community Engagement (CCE), for leading LLI’s “Lead Toxicity: How It Affects Us and What We Can Do.”

Jess helped members understand how lead exposure can affect our homes and communities, and, most importantly, what we can do about it.

We’re grateful to Jess for sharing her expertise with our LLI members and proud to highlight the Center for Community Engagement and the important work York College of Pennsylvania is doing to connect its expertise and resources with the needs of the York community. It’s another great example of the many ways learning at York College extends beyond the classroom.

Our first course of the fall semester was a great way to kick things off, bringing members back together, volunteers into action, and one of our fan-favorite instructors back in the classroom. Education Manager Kelly Nevin Lillie was there to welcome members as we launched our inaugural fall semester of lifelong learning at York College.

And this is just the beginning!

“You can’t understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.”

York College showed up in a big way for YWCA York’s Walk a Mile in Their Shoes this past weekend!

Together, YCP students and YC-LLI members walked through the City to raise awareness of domestic violence, gender-based violence, and sexual violence, and to stand together in support of survivors and our community.

And one YC-LLI member took the “walk a mile” message very seriously. Don Reichard literally walked until his soles came off!
